The recalled mini-fridges contain electrical components that can short circuit and ignite the plastic used to make the product. A recall of Frigidaire brand mini-fridges has been expanded to 964,000 units after multiple reports of the product catching fire, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Curtis International, based in Canada initially recalled 634,000 mini-fridges last summer, but another 330,000 models were added to the alert on Thursday.

The expanded recall now covers Frigidaire mini-fridges with model number EFMIS121.
The recalled items were sold exclusively to Target stores and website in the United States from January 2020 to October 2023 for around $30. There have been at least six reports of these mini-fridges catching fire, resulting in property damage.

The mini-fridges recalled last year had model numbers EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149 and EFMIS175, with 26 incidents involving the products overheating, melting or catching fire reported at the time. Two consumers reported injuries from smoke inhalation. Property damage related to these units totals more than $700,000.
Last year’s recall included mini-fridges sold at many retailers, including Walmart and Amazon.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled mini-fridges and request a refund.
The commission said consumers “should unplug and cut the power cord and write ‘Recall’ using a permanent marker on the front door of the appliance.” Consumers should dispose of the recalled mini-fridges in accordance with local and state regulations.
