  • Microsoft says it is determined to fight social engineering

Microsoft Teams is adding new fraud prevention features to try to combat social engineering scams by flagging external callers who pretend to be trusted organizations – otherwise known as brand impersonation.

An official Microsoft Message Center update confirms that the change is about to roll out, and a separate January 8, 2026 roadmap entry details what’s new.

“Identify if an external user is impersonating a brand commonly targeted by phishing attacks, during their first contact with a corporate user via a Teams call,” the entry summarizes.

The feature works by scanning new external callers for any signs of brand impersonation. Warnings will appear for Microsoft Teams users if calls are perceived as suspicious. Users can then choose to accept, block or end reported calls.

Desktop versions of Teams, including Mac, will be the first to benefit from the update, which is scheduled for general availability in February 2026.

“This helps reduce social engineering risks and improves tenant safety when users receive external calls on first contact,” the company wrote in a status update.

Microsoft has already rolled out other features in its video conferencing application to prevent potential attacks. In September 2025, Malicious URL Protection became generally available, scanning links shared in chats and channels for malicious intent.

The same month, Microsoft also began offering its Weaponizing File Type Protection tool, which scans executables in chats and channels to further protect users.

Speaking about brand spoofing protection, Microsoft reiterated its commitment to “caller identity protection and secure collaboration.”

Looking ahead, the Microsoft 365 roadmap already has more security updates planned, including support for suspicious call reporting, which is expected to arrive around March 2026.
