At least 14 migrants died after a speedboat carrying them collided with a Hellenic coast guard vessel off the island of Chios on Tuesday evening.

Greek authorities said the speedboat was making dangerous maneuvers and a pursuit was underway at the time of the collision in the Strait of Chios, near the village of Vrontades.

Twenty-four people were rescued, some of whom were seriously injured and others believed to be still missing.

The coast guard has not yet clarified the exact circumstances of the collision.

A search and rescue operation was underway Tuesday evening, involving four coast guard vessels, a private boat carrying civilian divers and a helicopter.

Greek state broadcaster ERT said the injured included seven children, a pregnant woman and two coast guard officers.

Four deaths were initially reported, but a report released at 11:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. GMT) indicated that ten more bodies had been found, bringing the confirmed death toll to 14.
