A kidnapping, a demand for Bitcoin and a TV icon: why the case of Nancy Guthrie gripped the United States

Before the sun rose over a barren desert landscape, YouTuber Jimmy Williams watched as hundreds of subscribers flocked to his online chat room.
A laptop balanced precariously on his lap, his iPhone framed by a light ring, he spends several hours a day dissecting the details of Nancy Guthrie’s sudden disappearance with his growing audience of true crime enthusiasts.
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, and authorities believe she was taken against her will in the early hours of February 1.
Williams is just one of dozens of curious observers and amateur sleuths who have visited the area.
The influx of spectators transformed a quiet, mid-sized town, popular with retirees, into a global media spectacle.
Police have yet to identify any suspects in her kidnapping, and her daughter – Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie – has repeatedly asked the public for help in finding her mother.
A reassuring face on morning television in the United States, Savannah Guthrie now finds herself at the same crossroads of hope and fear that defined many of her interviewees.
This time, however, the roles have been reversed and instead of asking questions, she is the one waiting for the answers.
Breakfast television offers its presenters a special feeling of intimacy with their audience, with segments often focusing on human interest stories.
Savannah Guthrie spent her childhood in Tucson, and in November she even invited people over to her mother’s house for a segment on the Today Show.
Kelly Himes lives several miles from Nancy Guthrie’s house, in the shadow of the Catalina Mountains. Like a growing number of Tucson residents, she felt compelled to stop and say a prayer alongside the growing flowers at the end of her driveway.
“Nancy is the same age as my mother, the same height as my mother and she has the same hair,” Himes told the BBC. “She lives alone, just like my mother. She is someone who could be anyone’s mother.”
Savannah Guthrie’s fame has proven to be a double-edged sword. In addition to drawing unprecedented attention and resources to the search for his mother, it also inspired feverish speculation and gave rise to a series of false leads.
Two weeks after Nancy Guthrie disappeared, investigators revealed they found several gloves, with the closest discovered about two miles from her home.
The sheriff’s department also said media reports that a glove was found inside his home or on the property were inaccurate.
For Williams’ growing audience, speculation about the affair only increases his intrigue.
Since Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, Williams’ Dollyvision YouTube channel has gained more than 8,000 new subscribers.
The interest in Nancy’s disappearance was “massive”, he said.
“You expect kidnappings to involve cash in a bag dropped somewhere remote, then the police come and arrest everyone. It’s different. It’s like a ‘new era’ of kidnapping.”
The days of ransom demands consisting of letters cut out of the pages of a magazine seem to be a thing of the past.
Secure servers, secret IP addresses and untraceable Bitcoin accounts have changed the face of one of the world’s oldest crimes, but a former FBI hostage negotiator, Chip Massey, said he believes Nancy Guthrie’s kidnappers will soon be caught.
Referring to video footage of a masked man outside his door shortly before his disappearance, he said someone somewhere would recognize the suspect based either on his behavior or body language.
“The attention this case has received is unprecedented,” he said, “and while a mask can hide a face, it cannot hide a person.”
Missing persons fliers featuring photos of Nancy’s smiling face, combined with highway billboards promoting the FBI’s tip line, made this case impossible to ignore, even for those who don’t watch the news. The White House said the FBI would give the investigation “all of its resources.”
“So many people now seem to be engaged in this search that it’s going to be very difficult for this individual to function. This type of surveillance makes it impossible to move a suspect and creates the feeling that the world is closing in on him. That’s when he starts to make mistakes,” Massey said.
Yellow ribbons now adorn the trees around Nancy Guthrie’s home, but as the days pass with no word on her whereabouts, the hope of an emotional return quickly gives way to a deepening sense of dread.
