Nestled on Pilgrim Street, one of Newcastle’s oldest thoroughfares, once used by 13th-century pilgrims heading to the relics of Gray Friars and Notre Dame Chapel, stand Gotham Hotela five-star gem in the heart of downtown. Housed in a Grade II listed former fire station, police station and magistrates court, this theatrical transformation by Bespoke Hotels has breathed new life into the building.
Designed by the architectural firm Cackett, Burns, Dick & Mackellar and erected between the wars, the Roman numerals MCMXXXI (1931) above the grand entrance tell a story of longevity and gravitas – and the winged beasts and griffins carved into Portland stone suggest a building built as much for spectacle as for civic purpose. Today, these same beasts seem to watch over another type of vocation: hospitality in its most daring form. Welcome to the truly spectacular Gotham Hotel, Newcastle’s first and only five-star hotel.
The reception A pre-arrival email invited us to personalize our stay and pre-register online for easy check-in. This proved beneficial as we seemed to arrive at a peak time for check-in. Rather than having to wait in line, the concierge quickly freed us from our luggage and was able to personally guide us through the process and escort us to our suite.
The room We stayed in one of the hotel’s Director Suites – Room 50 on the second mezzanine – and were struck by the abundance of space upon entry, as well as the boldly patterned flooring and welcoming palette. The size of the room was such that, from a distance, the large bed looked deceptively modest.
The room includes a separate seating area, neatly arranged around a large leather-covered Cambridge Satchel Co. trunk, transformed into a table – a place to read a book, watch TV or simply relax with a drink.
Opposite, a raised bathtub makes an eye-catching addition – a contemporary take on 1920s glamor from which you can also watch TV.
The bathroom In addition to the freestanding bath, the suite of course has a separate bathroom. This space is dominated by a shower head so large it could be mistaken for a satellite dish, ensuring a waterfall of water more sumptuous than any spa experience.
And to complement this, the bathroom is equipped with luxury Argentum toiletries.
Everything you need to plan your trip in 2026 The facilities The Gotham Hotel is as comfortable with nightlife as it is with a relaxing retreat. Within its historic walls there is a lot to offer without going out.
FIRE, located in the Old Engine Room, is a welcoming venue day and night, ideal for coffee and tea at 10:30am or expertly prepared cocktails after dark, with live music and DJs at the weekend.
Alternatively, the hotel’s private members’ club, Club Brass, is a quieter, more intimate bar area – as well as a separate, discreet side entrance to the hotel, available to guests staying in suites.
And a highlight not to be missed is Siren, the hotel’s restaurant with a focus on sustainability, seasonality and the best local produce, and a menu that highlights the best of the North East.
The seared scallop with pork belly, cauliflower and Lindisfarne mead narrowly got my vote over the Craster smoked fish terrine with horseradish, cucumber and dill, while my wife’s burrata with Waldorf salad and Arbequina olive oil earned her approval.
Our main courses included spicy monkfish with brown shrimp (usually with mussels but these were not available) and seaweed velouté, as well as steamed cod with autumn squash, jarred shrimp butter and pumpkin seeds. Next time I would love to try the venison pie.
We both indulged in the two chocolate options on the dessert menu: the chocolate and caramel tart with crème fraîche and praline, and the decadent chocolate brownie and truffle tart.
Breakfast is also served at Siren, starting with a tempting display of cereals, fresh fruit, Gotham baked pastries and fresh juices, before a choice of cooked options – from Gotham full English to avocado caprese and smoked salmon with scrambled eggs.
The location The Gotham Hotel occupies a prime location on Pilgrim Street. Next door are the Tyneside Cinema, the historic Theater Royal and Fenwick Department Store, home to the Aura Fine Art Fenwick gallery. Within half a mile you will find iconic landmarks such as the iconic Tyne Bridge, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a graceful, sloping span over the River Tyne; the evocative Newcastle Castle; the refined Laing Art Gallery; and Clarendon Fine Arts.
Spanning a mile radius, culture and charm abound with the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, the spectacular home of Newcastle United FC at St. James’ Park, the architectural spectacle of The Glasshouse concert hall, the science-rich Great North Museum: Hancock and the vibrant energy of Chinatown all easily explored on foot.
Other Nice Touches It’s in the attention to detail that the Gotham Hotel really shines. When we arrived, we found a personalized welcome message sitting next to a Gotham plate adorned with macarons and a pot of artisan shortbread – golden, buttery, and playfully inspired by the city’s firefighting heritage.
The suite’s built-in wardrobe cleverly conceals a well-stocked minibar (including local ‘Fire’ beer and complimentary Geordie ‘wata’), as well as a kettle with premium teas, coffee and hot chocolate, plus a selection of snacks available for purchase. Convenient but thoughtful extras, like a safe, hairdryer, and reading materials, from the hotel’s Gotham Bugle to high-end magazines, round out the experience.
The cost Cozy Club rooms usually start at around £150 (room only) or around £190 with The Gotham Experience, which includes breakfast and a chilled bottle of Prosecco in your room. For suites, expect to pay an extra premium of at least £100.
The best piece The Gotham Hotel has all the hallmarks of a luxury stay: beautiful interiors, impeccable service and attention to detail. But the way the hotel acknowledges its history in a contemporary way is something quite special: fire hoses transformed into light fixtures at the reception, fire station-themed displays in the hotel’s common areas, carefully selected drinks for the minibar, and fire station-themed naming of hotel facilities are just a few of many examples. Thus, the building retained its soul and its history was fully honored.
The final verdict For travelers looking for a luxury stay in the heart of Newcastle city centre, they need look no further. The Gotham Hotel is a boutique hotel that honors Newcastle’s heritage while writing a new chapter of its own. Whether you’re there for the location, the upscale rooms and suites, or the vibrant energy of FIRE and Siren, you won’t be disappointed by the personality and warmth of this latest addition to the city’s luxury hotel scene.
