The first trailer for Lanterns has finally taken off. Months later LanternsThe first teaser was released behind closed doors, HBO and DC Studios released the first teaser for the sci-fi murder mystery show on March 3 – and it’s already sparked a lot of discussion among comic book fans.

Look on it

Among these queries, there are seven that stand out – to me anyway. So here are the biggest questions I ask myself Lanterns‘ first trailer.

1. When is the official release date for Lanterns?

In short: we don’t know. Its first teaser only revealed that it would arrive sometime in August.

This launch month won’t surprise anyone who’s been following it Lanterns‘ development. Last October it was reported that Lanterns would not be released in early 2026 as planned. A month later, those fears were realized when HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed that Lanterns would be released around mid-2026. Then, in December 2025, a “new in 2026” HBO Max sizzle reel trailer was reaffirmed that Lanterns would arrive this year.

So, when will it premiere? In my opinion, it all depends Dragon House season 3. The Game of Thrones the prequel returns in June, but its official launch date has not been announced either. If it is released at the beginning of June, its broadcast in eight episodes will be completed at the beginning of August, thus allowing Lanterns to fill the then vacant Sunday night prime time slot on HBO. The longer it takes to Dragon HouseThe third season of will be released, however, later Lanterns is likely to happen.

2. Where is the famous Green Lantern costume?

So much for being green lanterns… (Image credit: HBO Max/DC Studios)

Of all the teaser’s main talking points, this one ruffled the most feathers among DC comic fans.

For the uninitiated: Members of the Green Lantern Corps – essentially, it’s an intergalactic space police agency – are famous for wearing shiny green costumes. However, the only glimpse we get of any of these costumes is a rather drab, largely brown and black jacket hanging in Hal Jordan’s closet.

It didn’t take long for fans to express their displeasure with this revelation. Indeed, Reddit threads at r/DCULeaks, r/DCcomics, and r/DC_Cinematic are full of comments from disgruntled and perplexed fans about the solid, matter-of-fact nature of Jordan’s cosmic hero outfit. Hell, in some circles the reaction was so intense that the official HBO Max X/Twitter account responded sassyly to the lack of green in the teaser.

HBO is sassy from r/DC_Cinematic

As some more level-headed Redditors, such as SDLRob and Tricky-Afternoon6884, have pointed out, there might be more than meets the eye. It may just be an old costume that Jordan wore, and/or that was passed down to him from a former human Green Lantern in Allen Scott.

Still, until the next DCU Chapter One show arrives and we get more context for this specific plan, expect more criticism to be leveled at its creative team.

3. What is it really about?

The plot of HBO’s Green Lantern TV series is largely shrouded in mystery (Image credit: John Johnson/HBO)

So far we have only received a few details about Lanterns‘ plot.

For starters, we know it will star Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as fan-favorite Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan. According to a press release from HBO Max, the pair will also be “drawn into a dark earthbound mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Oh, and it will be “as much a buddy cop series as it will be a superhero series,” according to one of its co-showrunners.

And… that’s about it. Of course, its first teaser gives us an idea of what to expect Lanternsbut it is a science fiction thriller whose plot is largely kept under lock and key.

4. Who is the main villain of HBO’s Green Lantern television series?

As for the culprit of the crime that Stewart and Jordan are investigating, that has also not been made public.

Some already know who Lanterns‘Big Bad is – don’t worry, I won’t say who it is here – after a star posted a major spoiler on social media last year. Fortunately, this trailer doesn’t spoil the surprise for more casual observers; hope Lanterns“The official full trailer doesn’t make it closer to launch.

5. What is Hal Jordan’s story in Lanterns?

Judging from the footage we’ve seen, Hal clearly prefers to be a lone wolf. (Image credit: John Johnson/HBO)

Considering the recklessness, arrogance, and sarcasm he displays in this two-minute teaser, it’s clear that Chandler’s Jordan retains many of the personality traits of his comic book namesake.

What isn’t it clear – and I’m sure Lanterns will cover this in flashbacks – that’s his backstory. Will this play out similar to how he becomes a Green Lantern on the page? Or have Lanterns“Did head designers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King take creative liberties with its origins?

Also, how long has he been operating as a Green Lantern? Why was he chosen to coach Stewart? And why doesn’t he consider Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who we met in 2025? Supermanto be a real Green Lantern? Hopefully we will get answers to all these questions soon.

6. Why is John Stewart chosen to be the latest addition to the Green Lantern Corps?

As a co-lead on the series, learn more about its casting and other key details in my Lanterns guide — Pierre’s Stewart will have as important a role to play in his story as Chandler’s Jordan.

However, while the comics contain clues as to why they are teamed up in the first place, this trailer doesn’t tell us why Stewart was handpicked to seemingly succeed Jordan as Earth’s leading Green Lantern. We don’t know which of Stewart’s many stories – his origins have been retconned several times – Lanterns will draw from, either.

Like Jordan, I hope HBO’s Green Lantern TV series provides answers in the present or via flashbacks when it premieres on some of the world’s best streaming services.

7. Will more Green Lanterns appear?

Guy Gardner should have a role in Lanterns (Image credit: DC Studios/Warner Bros. Pictures)

Yes, at least one will, anyway. Fillion has already confirmed (according to Entertainment Weekly) that Gardner will show up at some point.

However, there are many, many Green Lanterns that could also appear – and will any of them do so as well? Jordan mentions that there’s a Green Lantern squirrel (their name is Ch’p, FYI), but that doesn’t *ahem* shed light on a potential appearance from said alien rodent. I guess we’ll just have to wait Lanterns to be published in its entirety to find out.
