In Asia, India has the best trade deal with the US: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi: India has the best trade deal with the United States compared to its competing countries, and the two countries share a “very powerful” relationship, according to the Commerce and Industry Minister. Piyush Goyal said Saturday. India, he said, is building a global network of business partnerships.

Stressing that the 30,000 billion dollars American economy is the largest in the world and cannot be ignored, Goyal said: “It has been a fantastic journey.”

“We have the best relationship. You will have noticed that over the last year, President Donald Trump has always had the best things to say about India as a country and about Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi. We have a fantastic relationship with our counterparts there,” he said.

Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2026, Goyal also said that “ultimately, a trade deal is a matter of preference over your competitors.”

“Even within your family, sometimes there can be a misunderstanding or two,” he said. “It’s part of the process. I think the United States and India have a very, very powerful relationship. And we got the best deal out of all the countries that we compete with,” Goyal said when asked about India’s trade relations with the United States.

He added that the two countries are strategic partners and the largest democracies in the world.

“We have a great responsibility on our two nations,” Goyal said. “They are the largest economy in the world, with a $30 trillion economy, no one can wish them away,” he said, adding that ultimately a trade deal is a matter of preference over competitors. Insisting that India got “the best deal among all its competitors” in the Asian region, Goyal said: “What is a trade deal? You are trying to gain preference or preferential access for yourself, your products, your services, over your competitor.
