Gavin Newsom it’s having fun at the expense of Pete Hegsethblaming the War Department secretary for going on a $93 billion taxpayer-funded spending spree to buy expensive steaks, lobsters and crabs.
The California governor, and likely 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, criticized Hegseth for excessive spending during the final month of the fiscal year in September 2025, according to the government watchdog. Open the books. The watchdog noted that Hegseth’s bulk purchases were the largest of any federal agency since 2008.

Newsom also gave Hegseth crap about his shopping spree after the Fort Worth Star-Telegram/TNS published an AI image of Hegseth relaxing while surrounded by lobster tail, rib-eye and Alaskan king crab.
Breaking it all down, the War Department would have spent $6.9 million for lobster, $15.1 million for steak and $2 million for crab. The agency also splurged, purchasing a $98,329 Steinway & Sons grand piano for the Air Force chief of staff’s residence.
