Have we just witnessed the most embarrassing intelligence failure Russia has seen in years? Investigative group The Insider has revealed how a secret Russian unit – known as Center 795 – allegedly carried out assassinations and covert operations abroad, but was revealed in a remarkably simple way: one of its agents used Google Translate. According to the investigation, this allowed the FBI to read their communications in real time. So how did a supposedly “untraceable” elite unit go down so easily, and what does it tell us about modern Russian espionage? Jean-Emile Jammine spoke with the editor-in-chief of The Insider, Roman Dobrohotov.
