Warframe Players Fear The Game Has Been Hacked

Warframe Players receive bizarre in-game messages, often containing explicit language or threats. The nature of these messages is unknown at this time, but fans suspect the multiplayer shooter may have been hacked. Developer Digital Extremes is telling players not to accept these “harmful invitations.”

Fans share messages concerned about these strange messages in places like the Warframe subreddit. The messages sometimes include ableist insults or incomprehensible nonsenseleading some to speculate that the players sending them have been hacked. Digital Extreme said it was aware of the issue and take action to stop whatever is happening. In the meantime, the studio has asked players to report these messages to team support channels.

We are aware of some harmful in-game invites and are actively working to remove them. Please do not accept these invitations!

Some of the messages having made reference to an affiliation with the Warframe OpenWF communitywho works to make Warframe playable offline for preservation purposes. But representatives of the group released a statement on Discord disavowing the spam and saying they were not involved.

“Hello, we are aware that people are abusing live game invites,” it reads. “We just want to say that we had nothing to do with this and we don’t have access to the ‘game source code’ as one of the posts claims. In case you’re new here: this is a preservation project with server reimplementations available at source and some client-side changes. None of this is something we’re making available for the latest version of the game and especially not for the live version of the game.”

We’ve reached out to Digital Extremes for comment on the situation and will update the story if we receive a response.

Updated: 03/20/26, 5:30 p.m. ET: Digital Extremes released a statement on the situation on THE Warframe forumsclaiming that no accounts were compromised. The full statement is as follows:

First of all, we apologize for any distress this issue may have caused. Bad actors were able to interrupt and change team invitation text fields to appear as a personalized message. As the investigation is currently ongoing, we wanted to assure you that no accounts were compromised or any data exposed, and that you can continue to play Warframe safely. This was strictly a text change in the invitation prompt. If you have any concerns regarding your account, do not hesitate to make a Support ticket on the subject and our team will help you.

In the meantime, we have deployed a fix to resolve the issue. Matchmaking will still work normally, but you may experience temporary issues sending direct game invites. We will update you when this has been resolved.

We take this matter extremely seriously and apologize again for the distress.
