While speaking with fans at a Megacon Orlando panel hosted by ScreenRant, Boyega revealed that he had spoken privately to Dave Filoni on Finn’s future after the release of Kathleen Kennedy earlier this year.

When asked about the possibility of Finn returning to a galaxy far, far away, one fan shouted, “Call Dave on the phone.” Boyega reportedly responded, “Actually, I did.”

While this is far from confirmation that Boyega will actually reprise his role as Finn, it has many fans excited for his possible return, especially since he didn’t seem interested in the idea a few years ago.

In 2020, less than a year after “The Rise of Skywalker” hit theaters, Boyega publicly voiced his concerns about Disney when speaking to GQ magazine. “What I would say to Disney is don’t bring out a black character, market them to be much more important than they are in the franchise, and then put them aside. That’s not good. I’ll say it frankly,” he said at the time.

“You knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver,” Boyega continued. “But when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know everything. So what do you want me to say?”

“What they want you to say is, ‘I loved being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ No, no, no. I’ll take this deal when it’s a great experience. They gave every nuance to Adam Driver, every nuance to Daisy Ridley,” he added. “Let’s be honest. Daisy knows it. Adam knows it. Everyone knows it. I’m not exposing anything.”

In November 2020, Boyega told The Hollywood Reporter that a Disney executive reached out to discuss his concerns following the GQ publication. He described it as “a very honest and very transparent conversation.”

“There was a lot of explaining from them about how they saw things. They also gave me the opportunity to explain what my experience was like. I hope that being so open about my career, at this point, helps the next man up, the guy who wants to be the assistant cinematographer, the guy who wants to be a producer,” Boyega said. “I hope the conversation is no longer a taboo or an elephant in the room now, because someone just came along and said it.”

Boyega said he was ‘fine’ when asked about a ‘Star Wars’ return

He appeared to shut down speculation that he would return to the franchise again in 2022, telling SiriusXM “at this point I’m calming down, I’m fine” when asked if he was interested in reprising his role as Finn.

“Versatility is my path and Finn is at a good confirmation point where you can just enjoy him in other things: games, animation. I feel like [Episodes] 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. was good for me,” he added.

In the 2025 Apple TV+ documentary “Number One on the Call Sheet: Leading Black Men in Hollywood,” Boyega also criticized the franchise’s “vibe” of being “the whitest elite space.”

“Let me tell you, ‘Star Wars’ has always had the vibe of being in the whitest, most elitist space. It’s such a white franchise that a black person existing in [it] “It was something,” Boyega said in the documentary, according to Variety. “You can always tell it’s something when some ‘Star Wars’ fans try to say, ‘Well, we had Lando Calrissian and Samuel L. Jackson!’ “That’s like telling me how many chips are in cookie dough. It’s like they just scattered that in there, bro!”

“They’re OK with us playing best friend, but once we get to their heroes, once we lead, once we’re the trailblazers, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, that’s just a little too much! They get complacent,'” he continued. However, he acknowledged that being part of the sequel trilogy was a “fundamental moment” in his career.
