As a “less but better” girl, I’ve loved seeing minimalism make its way back into the cultural conversation. From digital minimalism and analog resurgence to the elegant simplicity of 90s beauty (hello, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy), it suddenly becomes chic again to strip things back. But after years of editing and organizing my life—and lots of trial and error—my biggest lesson for those curious about minimalism is this: Minimalism, especially when it comes to style and beauty, isn’t about copying a specific look. It’s about finding out what works for you and coming back to it again and again.
Yet even the most dedicated minimalist can accumulate a few too many over time. Earlier this year, I opened my makeup drawer and realized it had crossed the line between organized and crowded. So I decided to start from scratch.
Over the past few months, I’ve streamlined my routines, refining my closet essentials to simplify weeknight cooking and finally to edit my beauty products down to the pieces I use every day. The result is a minimalist makeup routine it seems effortless, refined and completely mine. At the top are the products that made the difference.

Organize your daily makeup essentials
A minimalist makeup routine doesn’t have to be boring. I’d actually say it’s one of the chicest things a girl can have. There’s something safe about knowing exactly what you like and reaching for the same few products every day. In a world that’s constantly pushing for the next launch or trend, this kind of clarity is refreshing.
So how do you create a collection of daily makeup essentials that really work for you?
Step 1: Purge
First comes the slightly intimidating part: letting go of products you no longer need. The good news? The energy of spring, with its built-in feeling of reset, makes it the perfect time for a beauty declutter.
I like to start by moving everything from my vanity to one place where I can see everything at once. From there I start editing. Expired products and anything I haven’t touched in months take priority. Then I do a second pass and remove impulse purchases or once-trendy items that no longer excite me.
What’s left is a smaller, more manageable collection, and the perfect starting point for creating a streamlined, minimalist makeup routine.
Step 2: Find What You Actually Use
From there, I take a closer look at the products I’m naturally drawn to. Are these the items I really love, or just the ones I use out of habit? The products I really can’t live without stay. The rest leaves.
Of course, I save a few extras for special occasions – the occasional glossy lip or sparkly eye – and a few shade variations for different seasons. But the goal is simple: keep my daily makeup products front and center so my morning routine is effortless.
Step 3: Elevate Your Essentials
I used to save my “best” beauty products for special occasions while reaching for my mid-tier staples every day. But in the words of Joan Didion, “each day is all we have.”
The cornerstone of a minimalist makeup routine is using fewer, but higher quality, products. And nothing feels more consistent than starting the day with items you actually enjoy using.
Step 4: Take a test drive
Once your change is complete, try your routine for a few days. Does it sound easy? Do the products work well together? Is it taking longer than you would like?
Refine as you go, modifying, adjusting and simplifying until you have a minimalist makeup routine that suits your taste and lifestyle. Trust me: once you find your selection, getting ready will be chic and effortless.
10 Favorite Minimalist Makeup Products
My own minimalist makeup essentials are a mix of longtime staples that I’ve been repurchasing for years and a few recent discoveries that have quickly gained permanent status in my routine. Although brands and formulas vary, they all share two essential factors: exceptional quality and effortless versatility.
As a beauty editor, I’m constantly testing trendy new launches: products with trendy ingredients and packaging designed to stop your scrolling. But the items that truly become part of my daily makeup routine are the ones that last. They wear wonderfully throughout the day, don’t irritate my sensitive skin (which is non-negotiable), and work just as well on the hundredth use as they did on the first.
Step 1: Prepare
I will always believe that good makeup starts with beautiful skin. A well-prepped complexion makes all other products look better and often means you need a lot less makeup overall.
Because I love multitasking formulas, many of my favorite skincare products are the first step in my makeup routine. Consider a tinted sunscreen that evens skin tone while protecting skin or a brightening fluid that adds subtle luminosity. Together, they create a hydrated, healthy-looking base that makes the rest of my minimalist makeup routine effortless.

SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen SPF 30
On days when I want my skin to look like its old self, just smoother and more even, this tinted SPF is what I’m looking for, providing lightweight coverage, sun protection, and that effortless “good skin” glow in just one step.
Victoria Beckham Beauty
The cellular rejuvenating highlighter
This luminous primer is my secret weapon for a minimalist makeup routine: it hydrates, smoothes, and leaves behind the kind of subtle, lit-from-within glow that makes anything layered look better.
Step 2: Create a Base
For me, a minimalist base means keeping coverage light: I want my skin to still look like skin. A touch of concealer or a transparent foundation product is often enough to even out everything while letting your natural texture shine through.
If you prefer a fuller coverage look, the key is simply to find formulas that work wonderfully with your skin. The goal of a minimalist makeup routine isn’t necessarily about reducing coverage—it’s about choosing products that seem easy to use, reliable, and worth using every day.

Whenever my skin needs a little extra polish, this blurring balm is the secret weapon: it softens texture, controls shine, and creates that velvety-smooth finish that still feels like real skin.
Step 3: Eyes
Some days I only wear mascara. Other days I ignore it completely. My eye makeup tends to change depending on the day and mood, but the three products I use most consistently are always the same.

This creamy eye pencil is endlessly versatile: I’ll use it to gently define my lash line, add a subtle smoky wing, or even tap a little on my waterline when I want my eyes to look a little more awake.

MEASURES
If there’s one product that instantly brings my whole look together, it’s this clear brow gel: it lifts and sets my brows all day, giving that effortless brushed-out finish that makes minimal makeup look complete.
Step 4: A Pop of Color
Whether it’s a bold lip or a natural blush, even a minimalist makeup routine benefits from a pop of color. It’s the easiest way to bring life to the face while maintaining an overall understated and effortless look.
Summer Fridays
This creamy blush melts into the skin for a natural-looking complexion, as if you’ve just stepped out for a few minutes. It’s the kind of effortless color that instantly makes your entire face look more awake.

Westman Workshop
This hydrating lipstick offers the perfect balance of color and care. The sheer tint adds polish without ever looking heavy, making it ideal for days when you want your lips to look a little higher.
Bonus: define and protect
The last step in my routine is a lightweight setting spray to keep everything looking fresh throughout the day. I also like to keep a restorative sunscreen spray in my bag, an easy way to freshen up my makeup while protecting my skin on the go.
COOL
This multitasking mist sets makeup while providing an extra layer of SPF, perfect for days when you’re on the go. A quick spritz refreshes your skin and keeps everything smooth and protected.
