I Reviewed Every Item of McDonald’s KPop Demon Hunters Meals: Here’s What to Order

KPop Demon Hunters fans, head to McDonald’s quickly. For a limited time, you can get yourself a meal that may sound like an April Fool’s joke, but isn’t. Participating McDonald’s restaurants offer both the HUNTR/X meal, named after the girl group from the Oscar-winning animated Netflix film, Demon Hunters KPopand the Saja Boys Breakfast Meal, named after the boy band in the film.

I went to McDonald’s on Tuesday, the first day the new meals came out, so I could try everything.

I mean, yeah, holographic photo cards, but I think I would have preferred a KPop Demon Hunters figure. Or patterned socks, like the ones handed out with the Grinch’s meal.

And the KPop Demon Hunters items are surprisingly pretty good! Be warned: once word gets around, they might be hard to get. McDonald’s Holiday Grinch Meal sold out quickly in some locations (too bad if you wanted a pair of the adorable Grinch-themed socks that came with it), so don’t wait for this limited-edition menu item.

Shake the fries, skip the Demon sauce

THE HUNTR/X mealnamed after the K-pop girl group in KPop Demon Hunters, is a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets meal that includes one medium drink and three special menu items.

The top fry is the one I mixed with Ramyeon seasoning, while the other is just a regular McDonald’s fry. I was surprised at how much I liked the seasoning!

Ramyeon McShaker Fries come with a small bag of soy, garlic, sesame and spice seasoning, plus regular McDonald’s fries. You sprinkle the seasoning into the bag provided, throw in the fries, shake it all up and eat.

My take: McDonald’s fries are legendary, and honestly, I didn’t want to season them and risk ruining the taste. Here’s the shock: I loved it. They give you a ton of seasoning and the fries get thick which I thought would be a nightmare. But it was a salty, savory delight. There is no meat in the seasoning, but it reminded me of a fried chicken coating – flavorful and rich.

The meal includes two new sauces for fries and nuggets. Hunter sauce is a sweet chili sauce mixing notes of chili, garlic and pepper. If you’re familiar with McDonald’s long-standing sweet and sour sauce, this reminded me of that, with just a touch of heat.

You can order one of each of the two KPop Demon Hunters sauces. Hunter sauce is better than the insanely purple Demon sauce, IMHO.

The other new sauce is Demonic sauce, a mustard sauce with a bit of heat and a bold purple color. There just isn’t enough dark purple food. But while the color was cool, I ended up scraping the nearly empty Hunter sauce cup, leaving most of the purple Demon sauce behind. I enjoyed the almost but not quite wasabi flavor of the mustard, but I wouldn’t order this sauce again.

Look! My McNugget wears a purple wig! The best thing about the Demon sauce was its bold purple color, not the spicy mustard kind of sauce itself.

You can try both sauces at no extra cost. I ordered through the app and just selected one of each of the two new sauces.

There is also a new dessert, the Derpy McFlurrywhich mixes creamy vanilla soft-serve ice cream with vibrant berry-flavored boba pearls and a swirl of wild berry sauce. McDonald’s named it after the supernatural feline, Derpy Tiger, from the KPop movie Demon Hunters.

You know all the jokes about how the McDonald’s ice cream machine is always broken? I tried to order the Derpy McFlurry at my local McDonald’s, but the app told me it wasn’t available. I’m not sure if the ice cream machine at this place was actually broken or if they didn’t get their delivery of popping pearls, but this is America: there was another McDonald’s less than a mile away that had the dessert.

My McFlurry had somehow melted by the time I got home because the McDonald’s closest to me didn’t have it. Insert your favorite “McDonald’s eternally broken ice cream machine” joke here.

And I’m glad they did! Although I’m not a fan of berries in ice cream, the thick soft serve and wild fruit sauce (blueberry? raspberry? both? I couldn’t tell) was a smooth and sweet combination. The boba pearls were also fun to put in my mouth, but be careful, they kind of leave a bit of… boba skin?

If breakfast is your bag, the new morning meal is Saja Boys Breakfast Meal.

It includes a Spicy Saja McMuffin Sandwichwhich is a sausage McMuffin with an egg and a spicy Saja Saucehash browns and a small drink. I hadn’t had a chance to tell my husband what was in the sandwich when he rushed into the kitchen while speaking on a work call and took a bite. He widened his eyes and moved his mouth in a universal sign of “HOT!” »

At first I thought he was exaggerating, but then I took a second bite, and the sauce was orange and peppery East hot. It’s also too sweet for my taste and I wouldn’t order it again. Without the sauce, breakfast is just an Egg McMuffin.

Both meals come with a photo card for one of the groups and a Derpy card. My breakfast included a photo card of Jinu and my lunch included one of Zoey. Each meal also had a Derpy card with a photo of Derpy Tiger and a QR code which, for some reason, I found incredibly difficult to scan. When I finally did, it took me to the McDonald’s app on my phone and asked me for the code on the card. Then it didn’t really do anything.

A McDonald’s representative told me this was intentional: entering the code means I’ll unlock content that won’t appear until April 26 and reveal “the winner of the ultimate McDonald’s fan battle.” So, I did it for myself.

Demon Sauce is a bold mustard sauce with heat and heat – and, best of all, it’s a bright purple.

The full KPop Demon Hunters menu should be available at participating McDonald’s locations now, and while I pushed McDonald’s reps to give an exact end date, it’s just “while supplies last.”

My final take: KPop Demon Hunters fans will enjoy the meals, but if they are kids, they may want a smaller Happy Meal style option. Ten McNuggets and fries is a lot, and a spicy Egg McMuffin probably isn’t for everyone. I tried to order a mini version of the Derpy McFlurry, but it was grayed out in my app and the standard version was huge.

If you want to try the dishes, I highly recommend the fries with Ramyeon seasoning, Hunter sauce, and the Derpy McFlurry with its satisfying boba popping (share it with a friend if you have a small appetite or if, like me, you’re browsing the full KPop Demon Hunter menu). I would give the Demon Sauce and the Spicy Saja McMuffin a pass.

It’s also a bit disappointing that the only extras in the meals (aside from the colorful Happy Meal-style boxes) are glittery holographic photo cards and a code for online content that’s still a month away. No collectible figurines or even Grinch-style patterned socks? This struck a bit of a sour note in this musical munch fest.
