Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration on May 5 that celebrates Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Today, people of Mexican descent celebrate Cinco de Mayo to honor their resistance, growth, and victory as a country. Although the Second French Empire tried to overtake them, Mexico emerged victorious. As followers of Christ, we must be aware of different cultures and learn about them as we progress in our lives.
God created all cultures and they deserve to be celebrated. Even if you haven’t personally celebrated Cinco de Mayo in recent years, give it a chance. You might find it’s your new favorite holiday! While many people confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican independence, it is actually a celebration of their resistance and endurance. Let’s celebrate with Mexico and toast their victory in 1862.
In the United States, many people celebrate Cinco de Mayo through cultural, gastronomic, and musical events. Faith in all cultures does not have to be a scary subject; instead, we can learn from it. Just because another believer celebrates differently than us doesn’t mean it’s wrong. As long as all celebrations honor God, there is no reason to condemn our brothers and sisters in Christ.
In your own life, what are your unique cultural traditions? You can celebrate birthdays, Chinese New Year, or the first day of the spring, summer, fall, or winter equinox. Celebrating faith across cultures is a blessing and a wonderful gift. It provides an opportunity to learn from each other, gain knowledge and spark hope in our hearts.
