Meta is preparing a sweeping workforce overhaul linked to its aggressive AI push, including plans to move thousands of employees into AI-focused roles while cutting managers and laying off workers this week.
Facebook’s parent company plans to lay off about 10% of its workforce on Wednesday as part of a broader restructuring linked to CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to restructure the company around AI tools and autonomous agents, according to an internal memo obtained by Reuters.
In the memo released Monday, Janelle Gale, Meta’s chief human resources officer, said the company plans to move about 7,000 employees to new positions. AI Initiatives while eliminating layers of management and flattening organizational structures.

This reshuffle, along with previous transfers and job cuts, will ultimately affect about 20% of Meta’s workforce, according to the memo.

The company had nearly 78,000 employees at the end of March, according to securities filings.
The overhaul comes as Meta invests billions in AI infrastructure and tools amid growing competition with OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. The company increasingly wants AI agents to perform tasks now handled internally by human employees, according to Reuters.

“As organizational leaders worked through the changes, many of them integrated AI native design principles into their new organizational structures,” Gale wrote in the memo. “Many organizations can operate with a flatter structure with smaller pod/cohort teams that can scale more quickly and with more ownership. »

Some of the employees being reassigned — a process workers would describe as “recruited” — are being moved to teams such as Applied AI Engineering and Agent Transformation Accelerator, groups focused on creating AI systems that can autonomously perform functions in the workplace.

Meta also reportedly closed about 6,000 job openings during the restructuring process – changes that triggered growing backlash within the company.
