OnePlus Slim Magnetic Power Bank for $28: Sleek in silver-grey aluminum with a chamfered edge, this power bank looks lovely, but the 5,000mAh capacity is just over half that which takes a bite after inefficiency.
Iniu Portable Charger for $22: It’s very small for a capacity of 10,000 mAh. You can charge at up to 45 watts from one of the USB-C ports or 18 watts from USB-A, but charging is slow, it doesn’t reach the listed capacity, and the screen sometimes doesn’t update properly.
FansDreams MChaos for $46: I love the idea of a portable power bank, and this one comes in lime green with a carabiner that makes it easy to attach to a bag, but charging is slow and you’ll be lucky to get a full charge for your phone.
iWalk Portable Charger for $27: The 4,800 mAh capacity won’t fully charge your device, but it’s small enough to keep in a bag at all times.
What Features Should I Look for in Power Banks?
There are a few things to consider when shopping for a portable charger.
The capacity of a power bank is measured in milliamp-hours (mAh), but this can be a bit misleading because the amount of power you consume depends on the cable you are usingthe device you are charging, and the charging method (Qi wireless charging is less efficient). You will never get the maximum capacity from a power bank. You can generally expect to get between 60 and 80 percent energy after energy loss due to heat and conversion. Some manufacturers list a “rated capacity” lower than has overall capacity to give you an indication of what you can expect in real-world use. We try to provide a minimum estimate of what you will get in terms of device fees.
The price of recharging devices like smartphones, is measured in watts (W), but most power banks list voltage (V) and amperage (A). Fortunately, you can calculate wattage yourself simply by multiplying voltage and amperage. Unfortunately, getting that maximum rate also depends on your device, the standards it supports, and the charging cable you use. Many smartphones, including Apple iPhonessupports the power delivery standard, which means you can use higher power power banks to charge the device without any problem. A few phones, like Samsung’s Galaxy S line, support an additional PD protocol called PPS (Programmable Power Supply) that goes up to 45 watts. Many phones also support Qualcomm’s proprietary Quick Charge (QC) standard. There are other proprietary fast charging standards as well, but you generally won’t find power banks that support them unless they come from the smartphone manufacturer.
Your device will need pass-through support if you want to charge your power bank and use it to charge another device simultaneously. The Nimble, GoalZero, Biolite, Mophie, Zendure, and Sharge portable chargers listed support direct charging. Anker has discontinued pass-through support in some of its products because it has found that differences between the output of the wall charger and the input of the device being charged can cause the power bank to turn on and off quickly and shorten its lifespan. Monoprice also does not support direct billing. We advise you to be careful when using pass-through, as this can also cause portable chargers to heat up.
Can I take an external battery on a plane?
It is safe to fly with a power bankbut there are two main restrictions to keep in mind when boarding a flight: you must have the portable charger in your carry-on bag (it cannot be checked in) and it must not exceed 100 watt hours (WH). If your power bank has a capacity greater than 27,000 mAh, you should check with the airline. Below that, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Some airlines have introduced stricter rules in 2025, so always check with your airline of choice before traveling. For example, some airlines prefer that you not use or charge external batteries during a flight, others require that external batteries be in your carry-on bag under the seat in front of you and not overhead, and some limit the number of external batteries you can have on board.
Why are you looking I should avoid cheap power banks
Many years ago, the The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has gained notoriety when its batteries caught fire during a series of incidents. Since then, there has been a steady stream of similar, albeit isolated, incidents. However, despite the high-profile media coverage of batteries gone bad, the vast majority of lithium-ion batteries are safe.
The chemical reaction that occurs inside a lithium-ion cell is complex, but like any battery, there is a negative electrode and a positive electrode. In lithium batteries, the negative is a lithium-carbon compound and the positive is cobalt oxide (although many battery manufacturers are moving away from cobalt). These two compounds cause a safe reaction when controlled and provide energy to your devices. However, when the reaction gets out of control, you end up with headphones melting in your ears. What changes a safe reaction to an uncontrolled reaction can be any number of things: excessive heat, physical damage during use, physical damage during manufacturing, or using a bad charger.
The three basic rules that have kept me safe while testing dozens and dozens of batteries are:
- Avoid cheap cords, chargers and plug adapters;
- Make sure the batteries are not exposed to excessive heat (above 110 degrees Fahrenheit);
- Inspect batteries regularly for signs of damage.
The most important thing is to avoid cheap wall outlet adapters, cords, and chargers. This is the most likely source of your problems. Those chargers you see on Amazon for $20 less than the competition? It’s not worth it. They likely drove prices down by skimping on insulation, leaving out energy management tools, and ignoring the basics of electrical safety. Price alone is no guarantee of safety either. Buy from reputable companies and brands.
And then there’s the heat. Too much can cause all kinds of problems, both in terms of rejection and in terms of safety. Avoid heat and take care of your batteries while they are charging. If your device gets too hot while charging, it could be a sign of problems. Likewise, be wary of swollen, bulging, or deformed batteries.
Why is my external battery charging slowly?
I’ve explained charging rates and capacity above, but several factors can cause the charging speed to be slower than expected. The rate is determined by the device being charged, so your phone will demand a certain amount of power, which changes depending on its battery charge level, device settings, and battery temperature.
All devices charge slower when they are completely empty, when the battery is almost full, and when the battery is overheating. The cable you use will also have a maximum charge rate, as will the different ports on the power bank. Wireless charging is more convenient, but also slower than wired charging.
I’ve been testing power banks for almost two decades, and my home office has batteries of them at all times. I test every portable charger that arrives for at least two weeks. I’m still checking how many times it can fully charge my test phone (currently an iPhone 16). I’ll also try charging my Pixel 10 Pro XL and Samsung Galaxy S24+ to test charging speeds and whatnot. For larger capacity power banks, I test charging an iPad Mini and a MacBook Air. I test how long it takes to recharge each empty external battery.
Apart from these standard tests, I try to use the powerbanks in my daily life, just to see how they feel, and my wife and children often help me and share their opinions. For some of our top picks, I continue testing for months to get a sense of their reliability and durability, although it’s not possible to do this for every device that lands on my desk. Beyond function, I consider form and usability. I keep an eye on user reviews and consider each manufacturer’s warranties and customer service.
