The world of sound animated can be a misleading environment, especially since it is much more than the already excellent dark fantasy world of Berserk. This can include intense psychological dramas, sweet romances, and more than a few historical epics, as seinen audiences crave stylized stories that are either powerfully character-driven, deeply philosophical, or somewhere in between. While recent seinen successes are already pushing the boundaries to become memorable hits of all time. like the case of Witch hat workshop, It’s always best to let recency bias simmer until the end of a given season, in order to see if a series stands the test of time.

This means that while many seinen anime are predictable ultraviolent affairs that their targeted adult male audience may gravitate toward, they also include various other forms of explicit content, but with the promise of a rewarding viewing experience beyond that. Often nowhere near as popular as typical shonen fare, seinen anime instead enjoys wide critical acclaim and rewatchability for fans, no matter how many years may pass.

15 Golden Kamuy

Release date

While he eventually completed the series, streaming 29 million copies and returning to its hockey manga roots with Dogsred soon afterestablishing himself as a writer and artist capable of creating moving stories and heartbreaking humor within each other’s panels. He is also very clearly drawn to the depiction of Hokkaido in his works, among other recurring character elements.

In the case of Geno Studio and Brain’s Base’s 2018 gem, which recently concluded with its fifth and final season in March 2026, Golden Kamuy managed to turn a brutal historical epic set after the Russo-Japanese War into a fun and emotional adventure. Its distinctive characters, intensely violent visuals, and disarming, zany comedy dissolved the tension but kept audiences on their toes. Its protagonist, veteran soldier Saichi Sugimoto, traverses Hokkaido in search of a stash of Ainu gold alongside Ainu huntress Asirpa, competing with soldiers and many seedier elements trying to get their hands on this coveted fortune.

My darling costume may have been published in a seinen publication, but it has a surprisingly broader appeal in its charming and extremely heartwarming insight into a high school romance between a bubbly gyaru cosplayer and an introverted hina doll maker. Although he hides his passions, Marin Kitagawa accidentally discovers Wakana Gojo’s natural aptitude for costume design, as he develops a keen eye inherited from his work on traditional dolls. Soon, as Wakana begins designing costumes, he expresses admiration for Marin’s beautiful cosplay, a great moment as he comes out of his shell for her, while Marin finds himself developing a huge crush.

Fans will continue to keep hope for season 3but the immense romantic tension felt in this series is palpable. The central pair are perfectly adorable even watching Marin’s pout while accepting spoonfuls of food from Wakana in the obligatory illness episode, and it’s immensely satisfying to see Marin’s cosplays ranging from ecchi, to classic bunny girl outfits, to masculine changes like Rei Kogami.

15 best new generation mangas to read in 2026

The landscape of anime and manga fandom has completely changed in the post-pandemic years, so here’s what you should check out next!

Cleared is a humanistic mix of what could be a typical time-slip drama. Instead of the powerful, romantic and emotional affair of similar settings like that of 2024 Nice runner A K-drama, this anime blends powerful melancholic tones true to its medium and a compelling mystery at its heart. It’s distinctly humanistic, not exploiting the gimmick of Satoru’s powers, but instead using it as an opportunity for him to protect those he cares about in ways that are meaningfully felt over time.

Network
AT-X

Directors
Hitoshi Haga, Shunsuke Takarai, Satoshi Mori, Motoki Nakanishi

One of the most beautiful anime of 2017, Made in the abyss, quickly made an impression as a manic and dark seinen fantasy adventure despite its initially cute veneer. Riko, the protagonist, joins her robotic companion Reg to explore the giant underground hole near the town of Orth in search of her mother. The series then delves into powerful and mature territory, with the latter part of the first season delving into particularly violent territory, before even mentioning the series’ other troubling subject matter.

But Made in the Abyss is not only an impressive showcase of the disturbing sides of seinen; it’s an excellent demonstration of its animation studio, the Kinema Citrus line. Between episodes of the seinen anime Made in the Abyss are massive hits like My happy marriage, with a keen sense of shojo, before diving back into seinen with The Rise of the Shield Hero.
