The only father I remember my own father being given a plate of fried sardines. It was prepared by my mother, his ex-wife, who knew with what gratitude he would receive a dish he grew up with in the Italian neighborhood of a steel town, dying with such theatrical flair that Bruce Springsteen named a song after that. (A acoustic Springsteen song, no less.) We lived in a nearby town that had many red sauce restaurants, but they didn’t serve canned fish in those days. Since my father had very limited food preparation skills and didn’t date the kind of women who could cook, this was the only way he could taste that flavor again.
When it comes to Father’s Day gifts, ending up with a long-lost childhood recipe is kind of a good thing. If you can do it, this is what you should give your dad this year. Otherwise, I have some ideas here that I’ve spent the last few months putting together for different types of dads and for many different budgets. With the exception of a few items chosen by other dads on the team, these are all things I’ve personally tried and approved, and I hope they make your dad as happy as these sardines made mine.

Maybe your dad has fond memories of Super Soakers from his youth, but the SpyraFour is the new best water gun ever made. WIRED was covering the German brand’s powerful electric water guns since 2023and they only got better with time. Just ask my daughter, who has to use the SpyraThree while I shoot her with this gun that reloads much faster (it draws in enough water for about 20 shots in a cool 12 seconds) and has a fully digital smart display to select between shooting styles and show you how much ammo you have left. This is a very powerful water gun that shoots accurately up to 50 feet, and it is recommended for children at least 14 years old. I can confirm that when I let my 11 year old daughter and her friends play with it, the battle often ends in tears. This only adds to the appeal of the gift for any dad over 40: When I was his age, we threw rocks at each other and I had to go to the emergency room to get stitches that you can still see. Good times.

High-fire cooking has been the hottest trend in grilling for half a decade now, perhaps in response to the rise of super-automated pellet grills and high-tech smart grills. The last promising device is the charcoal oven for which the Spanish brand Mibrasa is best known (the smallest model, the Nano, costs just under $12,000). This would be an amazing gift for your father if budget allows. However, those of more modest means can confidently gift this super premium hibachi grill from Mibrasa, made from heavy-gauge steel.
The MH 300 Plus measures about a foot square and weighs about 18 pounds empty. You can carry it, but it is a bit heavy. It gets very hot (nearly 500 degrees Fahrenheit) and keeps the meat very close to the charcoal so that the drips are vaporized and turned into flavorful smoke. I made steak tacos and chicken skewers, and they turned out perfectly with a touch of arctic char. When I update this guide in a few weeks, I will have used it to test Snake River Farms Wagyu Beef Gift Box which just arrived, and it looks like it will be on this list soon as well.

For the beach dad/pool dad
This is one of the few products on this list that I haven’t personally tested, but for a dad with a pool, it’s such a great gift idea that I had to include it. Our reviewer gave the Sora, which sits in the middle of the Beatbot range, an excellent review of 8/10saying it will clean debris from almost any damage short of a hurricane. This 20-pound robot crawls up the walls of your pool, vacuums up the gunk, and saves Dad from having to skim for an hour every week.

I slathered myself in sunscreen – most dads I know do it too – which is why I quickly became addicted to hoodies. I collected half a dozen to wear when taking my daughter to the beach or pool, or for a hike. The best one I have used so far is the EMS Sunguard Linewhich offers SPF 50 protection in a thin, soft and breathable polyester-spandex blend. It dries super-quickly and the hood will cover as much of the face as needed without being bulky when not in use.

Portable tire inflators and jump starters are two good things to have, and I have both. Noco’s AX65 is a powerful combination of the two and the best version of either that I’ve come across. The tire inflator is extremely fast, as fast as a gas station air compressor in my testing, and claims it will take a tire from flat to 40 psi in two minutes. It packs 2,150 amp-hours of power, enough to jump in a regular passenger car several times. It easily jumped my Dieselgate-era Jetta (I’ve had the unit for a month and already needed to jump my car thanks to its lack of alarm when you leave the lights on). It will also charge a phone or laptop via a 60-watt USB-C port, so it won’t just take up dead space on car trips until disaster strikes.

There are dozens of OBD2 scanners, and I’ve owned three or four different ones. The BlueDriver stands out for its many powerful features without requiring a subscription or credits to unlock its functions. This device plugs into your car’s port and connects to a phone app via Bluetooth so you can read and, in many cases, clear trouble codes. It works pretty well with my VW, although it’s not a full VCDS system.

Decked is the sturdiest of the many car storage systems I’ve used over the years, and what the mid-sized Halfrack lacks in size it more than makes up for in ruggedness. It has a seal so it doesn’t leak, and not only can you stand on it, you’re supposed to drive a truck on it without it cracking (I haven’t driven my truck on it). My childhood neighbor, Don Elmerick, had the most beautiful lawn I had ever seen. Elmerick, who lived across the street from my mother’s house for almost 50 years before her passing in 2019, spent every summer meticulously tending to his a create bright green grass, sunbathe while mowing shirtless in jeans. I’ve tested half a dozen robot lawn mowers over the years, and only when Eufy E15 last year I finally tried one that I would recommend people buy. As my colleague Simon Hill reported: Robot lawn mowers are really good now. I don’t want to wear Simon out, but this Segway Navimow brand mower is the best yet. Installation takes about 20 minutes, then your turf will descend to the set height with the touch of a button or according to a schedule you set in the app. You may need to do a little cleaning around the edges with a weed whacker, but most of the work is done without any intervention.

This little Leatherman baby comes in stylish colors and has 10 of the most essential tools (a knife, a bottle opener, scissors) with nothing extra. There are some very clever touches, like a slotted screwdriver that will work with a Phillips head in a pinch. I wouldn’t build a deck with it, but it can get you out of a jam with a loose screw on a camp chair or propane stove. Dads will tell you that you can never have enough small knives and multi-tools, and this one makes a lovely, inexpensive gift.

ForgeLine is a spin-off from Patagonia, where it was formerly a government-contracted equipment producer to make clothing for U.S. special operations forces. The Oaks Camp Trousers are made from British Millerain dry waxed cotton in a hexagonal weave and are far more durable than cotton has any right to be. Because they’re cotton, they’re breathable and fit like jeans while being reinforced enough that you feel like you could get out of a moving vehicle without ripping them.

This is the updated premium version of the O-Light flashlight that we have in addition. our list of the best. Like its predecessor, it has a dial to select between beams, including a standard bright white 1,700 lumen light, as well as a UV light and a green laser beam useful for signaling objects over long distances. This model offers USB-C charging, a welcome feature in the field, although the proprietary magnetic disk is excellent. Charge it to maximum and you can enjoy it for a full 14 days in its lowest lighting mode.

The Ricoh GR IV is the smallest and lightest camera you can give Dad. The image quality is exceptional and it legitimately fits in a pocket. We’re not even talking about the pocket of Dad’s zippered cargo pants; this thing will fit in a jeans pocket. Unless Dad likes skinny jeans, in which case, God help you.
Ricoh’s GR series cameras have long been the choice of serious photographers, with a good all-round 28mm lens and a 25.7-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor that produces excellent images that can be printed in poster size. The fourth version recommended here includes the new dust-proof mechanism which fixes the fatal flaw of the first models (which were prone to dust on the sensor). It also has a much-improved autofocus and tracking system to help Dad get the shot even while he’s handing you his beer.
The only reason maybe he shouldn’t buy this one for dad is if he wants to film a video. The GR IV’s video specs top out at 1080p and the images it produces are downright awful. I really think the video features are just there to mock you for wanting to film a video. If Dad wants something video capable, take a look at our guide to compact cameras. —Scott Gilbertson

Retro-looking headphones seem to be all the rage lately, with brands like Engineering among teenagers And Koss get into style. This very cool and very functional pair from design-focused electronics brand Gadhouse came to me with a review unit for the Miko cassette player, and while I love the player and hope to review it soon, the Wesley headphones stole the show. Unlike other retro-style foam-cushioned headphones I’ve used, these sound great and have modern features like an in-line microphone and an included USB-C adapter so you can connect them to your phone.

Look, dads have a lot going on, and understanding that their personal style isn’t always — or ever — at the top of the list. That’s where you come in.
