Valve’s Steam Machine: summer release planned, still no price

Valve is still committed to releasing its home PC gaming console, called the Steam enginedespite the skyrocketing prices of gaming hardware across the board, including enterprise. Steam bridge. June was considered one of the most likely times for Valve to release its home console, but while there is no specific release date yet, Valve has offered an update on when the Steam Machine will launch.

The Steam Machine is expected to be released this summer, according to a blog post published by Valve on Thursday. It will come out alongside the Steam frameValve’s VR headset, which was revealed alongside the Steam Machine and new steam controller last November.

The Steam Machine is Valve’s gaming PC, built into a roughly 6-inch cube designed to connect to a living room TV. The goal is to bring a simplified PC gaming experience to a wide audience and for game developers to optimize a single spec, as they did with the Steam Deck. Although the Steam Machine’s hardware is expected to be slightly more powerful than that of the standard PS5 or Xbox Series X, the company does not view the Steam Machine as a direct competitor to those consoles. The price has not yet been confirmed, but with the persistent shortage of PC memorythe price will not be easy on the players’ wallets.

Here’s everything we know about the steam engine.

When is the Steam Machine released?

Valve said Thursday that the Steam Machine will have a summer release date. When the hardware was first revealed, the company said it would arrive in early 2026. On February 4, Valve confirmed that the PC would be delayed in its first major Steam Machine update since its unveiling.

This year is proving to be a pretty tumultuous time for video games. It’s been almost six years since the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, which is usually the time when these companies start teasing their new hardware. However, due to lack of memory, these companies were forced to increase the prices of their respective consoles and will likely wait for big news regarding their next-gen hardware until memory prices drop. Game developers are also petrified of releasing anything in November, lest they get caught up in the whirlwind of hype that exists. Grand Theft Auto 6scheduled for release on November 19. If there is a perfect time for Valve to release its new console, it will be mid-August as a buffer from September, which becomes flooded with game releases.

Can I pre-order the Steam Machine?

There are no pre-orders available for the Steam Machine yet. When pre-orders become available, they will likely be on the Steam Machine hardware page.

If Valve does pre-orders, the company could have a system to roll out consoles in a timely manner, as it did with the Steam Deck. With the Steam Deck, you can pre-order the device and, depending on when the order was submitted, you will get a designated time frame for its release and the date you will receive it.

Valve also required anyone wishing to pre-order the Steam Deck to have a Steam account. This would prevent scalpers from ordering multiple devices at once, which will likely be the case with the Steam Machine.

How much will the steam engine cost?

This is arguably the biggest question surrounding the Steam Machine, and for good reason. Valve said the console would be priced in the same range as a gaming PC with the same type of power. There has been speculation that this would put the price somewhere between $600 and $800.

However, the global RAM shortage continues to drive up the price of memory. This could mean the Steam Machine could cost $1,000 or more, which would be a hard sell for many and make it less competitive compared to the PlayStation 5 or a typical gaming PC.

Valve said on February 4 that it was still trying to determine the price of the Steam Machine.

“Limited availability and increasing prices for these critical components mean we need to review our shipping schedule and exact pricing (particularly for Steam Machine and Steam Frame),” the company said.

What are the specifications of the steam engine?

Valve has released the specifications for the Steam Engine, but on the hardware page there is a note at the bottom saying “some specifications subject to change before availability.” It’s not common to see this kind of disclaimer, which suggests that if pricing or lack of RAM makes the console too expensive, Valve can make adjustments to keep the price attractive.

What is unique about the steam engine?

Valve does much more than just make a small gaming PC. The company offers some features not found on the PS5, Switch 2, or Xbox Series consoles.

For starters, there are removable faceplates for the steam engine. This is similar to the Xbox 360 faceplates, which offer a bit of customization for the console.

Steam engines are scalable. You can increase storage by adding a microSD card to the console’s microSD card slot or replacing the solid-state drive. There is also the option to upgrade RAM, but this will require a few extra steps compared to swapping storage.

The Steam Machine will also just be a computer when needed. Connect it to a monitor with a mouse and keyboard and the console will act as a Linux desktop. There’s also the option to install Windows instead of SteamOS, which would allow one to still play PC games, although the experience won’t be as smooth as SteamOS.

The Steam Machine is also a PC.

The Steam Machine’s Steam controller will seamlessly connect to the console. And, for multiplayer games, four controllers can connect to a console very easily.

Wait, didn’t Valve already have steam machines?

Type of. In 2013, Valve unveiled a new operating system called SteamOS. This is what powers the Steam Deck and creates Big Picture mode, which allows players to play their PC games in a mostly console-like experience instead of the typical desktop experience of using a mouse to double-click a game to start.

Alongside the operating system, Valve also released its Steam Engine Platform. This allowed hardware manufacturers to develop computers shaped more like a home console rather than a desktop computer. Alienware and Dell were among the notable companies that developed their own Steam machines, but none of them really took off, in part due to the fact that many games were not compatible with Linux-based SteamOS.

Steam machines collapsed in the mid-2010s because making games compatible with SteamOS was not a priority for game developers at the time. It wasn’t until 2018 that Valve developed Proton, a compatibility layer for SteamOS to make most Windows games easier to run. Proton currently supports over 20,000 Windows games.

Valve also ended up offering an alternative to purchasing entirely new hardware. In 2015, the company launched Steam linka device that allowed PC games to be streamed directly to a television.
