If you’re an Apple device user and have ever tried and failed to find an email message you know you received, or a photo you know you took, Apple has news for you. The company said Monday during its WWDC 2026 event that he realized that the search was not working well. So he completely rebuilt it.

“We’ve all had that moment where you’re looking for something that you know is there, but it just isn’t showing up,” said Stacey Ford, vice president of OS program management, during the WWDC keynote. “So on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, we’ve rebuilt the search foundations that power Spotlight, Photos, and Mail. At its core, the search index is a rich catalog that your device builds from all your content, so it can understand what you have and where to find it.”

Ford says the company has reorganized search to reindex new and older content. Perhaps most optimistic of all, she said the mail app would benefit from a new “filing system” that should surface the mail you’re looking for, every time it’s sent.

As a long-time iPhone user, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Apple’s new search system works as promised. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to find a travel itinerary or an email about something important that my husband (an Android user) had sent me, only for the device to confidently present me with an old email that doesn’t even include the terms I searched for.

And if this can help me find the photo I’m looking for too, hooray!
