OpenAI announced Thursday that it would acquire SOa startup that provides secure, preconfigured cloud environments where artificial intelligence agents can access tools, systems and context.
Ona’s technology will enable OpenAI’s coding assistant, Manuscriptto take on longer tasks, OpenAI said. It will also help more organizations deploy agents, which perform tasks independently on behalf of a user, in production, the company said.
OpenAI did not disclose terms of the acquisition, which is still subject to customary closing conditions. The Ona team will join OpenAI and work as part of the Codex team once the deal closes.
“I always thought that selling the company would feel like an end. Instead, I feel like our life’s work has become bigger and more important,” wrote Johannes Landgraf, CEO of Ona, in a message is LinkedIn.
OpenAI kicked off the AI boom with the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022, and it has invested in Codex in recent months as software developers have adopted AI agents as part of their workflows. He races against his main rival, Anthropicwhich has seen a period of explosive growth over the past year, thanks in part to the popularity of its own AI coding assistant, Claude Code.

OpenAI has confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, just days after Anthropic submitted its own confidential filing with regulators.
Elon MuskIt is EspaceXwhich merged with its AI startup xAI earlier this year, is set to begin trading Friday in what is expected to be the largest public market debut in history.
In order to maintain an advantage over its competitors, OpenAI has made several acquisitions in recent months. In March, it announced it would buy cybersecurity startup Promptfoo, after acquiring health tech startup Torch for around $60 million in January.
This agreement follows OpenAI’s announcement in October that it acquired the startup Software Applications, which created an AI interface called Sky for Apple Mac users. OpenAI shook up the tech sector in May 2025 when it announced that it had purchased Jony Ive’s AI device startup io for over 6 billion dollars.
