Disney The Toy Story franchise still has buzz.

The fifth installment of the Pixar film series raked in $160 million in its opening weekend, the highest in franchise history. Internationally, “Toy Story 5” raked in $152 million, bringing its estimated worldwide haul for the three-day period to $312 million.

“Toy Story 4” held the previous franchise record, generating $120.9 million when it opened in 2019, according to Rentrak data. In total, the film series has raked in more than $3 billion at the global box office since the first film debuted in 1995, with two of its installments each topping $1 billion worldwide.

“Toy Story 5” had the second-biggest opening for an animated feature, just behind “The Incredibles 2,” which earned $182.7 million domestically in 2018.

According to EntTelligence data, about 11.5 million moviegoers went to see “Toy Story 5” over Father’s Day weekend. And more than a quarter of the public opted for premium, more expensive large format screenings. IMAX reported $11.5 million in ticket sales domestically and $18.4 million worldwide.

“Toy Story 5” continues tendency towards strong theatrical screenings for family titles, since almost 70% of ticket buyers were part of family groups.

“Another incredible summer weekend is in store thanks to the massive release of “Toy Story 5,” a film that has appealed to every audience imaginable and thus become the ultimate four-quadrant film,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Market Trends Manager at Rentrak.

Over the past two years, family rate with a PG rating won at the box office, outperforming films rated PG-13 and R, according to Rentrak data.

Additionally, animated feature films typically don’t premiere first at the box office, meaning they regularly generate ticket sales during their run in theaters, thereby gaining word of mouth.

“Disney and Pixar have orchestrated a perfectly timed, perfectly marketed film that has charmed audiences and critics and is now ready to play for weeks in theaters as it reaches $1 billion and counting at the worldwide box office,” Dergarabedian said.
