Mars Petcare claims the two affected batches were sent for destruction but were fraudulently sold to consumers. Two packs of Pedigree brand dog food were recalled on the potential presence of metal and plastic.
Mars Petcare US issued a voluntary recall July 2 for 13.2-ounce cans of high-protein ground chicken and duck flavor for dogs, according to a company announcement.
Affected products include lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.

The recalled items did not meet Mars and Pedigree’s safety and quality standards, the company said. As part of the quality control process followed by all Pedigree products, these two batches were sent to a third-party supplier for destruction.
But Mars later discovered that the product had been fraudulently diverted and sold in the US market.
“The potential presence of sharp metals and foreign plastic materials in cans could pose a danger to your dog,” the company’s announcement states.

Anyone who purchased the affected dog food Please do not give it to your pet and contact Pedigree for a replacement.
Consumers with concerns after giving the recalled product to a dog are urged to contact a veterinarian.

“Mars is working with authorities to determine how these products entered the market. We are committed to protect pets and help consumers identify and remove affected products,” the company said.
