Twenty-five years after launching a rap career that reshaped Southern hip-hop, IT. says he’s finally ready to step away from the spotlight.
The Grammy winner isn’t leaving because of waning success or a lack of opportunities. Instead, he believes he has already accomplished everything he once dreamed of, allowing him to close a chapter while embracing family life and a different future.
TI says his musical journey appears to be over
For many artists, retirement announcements come with caveats. TI, however, seems remarkably certain that now is the right time to move on.
Talk to PEOPLEthe Atlanta rapper explained that his decision was not motivated by frustration with the industry. Instead, it comes from a sense of fulfillment after spending more than two decades building one of hip-hop’s most recognizable careers.
“I got everything I expected from the match,” he said.
This perspective gives added meaning to his latest album, “Kill the King,” which he describes as his final studio project. Rather than continuing another chart-topping era, the record serves as a final statement from an artist who helped define the 2000s with hits like “Bring Em Out,” “Whatever You Like” and collaborations like Justin Timberlake’s “My Love” and Rihanna’s “Live Your Life.”
His retirement also comes during a pivotal year. This month of October will mark 25 years since the release of “I’m Serious,” the album that introduced listeners to the rapper’s incomparable delivery and laid the foundation for a career that would eventually garner Grammy Awards, platinum records and the self-proclaimed title “King of the South.”
TI and Tiny found their strength despite difficult years
Although TI’s music career has brought enormous success, it has also come through years of public scrutiny.
His relationship with his wife Tiny has weathered legal challenges, intense media attention and personal setbacks that have tested both their marriage and their public image. Yet these experiences now appear to be one of the main reasons the rapper is enjoying where his life is currently at.
Reflecting on their relationship, he told PEOPLE: “When someone has endured dangerous circumstances with you, been with you during your darkest hours, it makes the bright moments even brighter.”
He added: “I think God’s grace has brought us through and we are now living in brighter times and days. »
The couple began dating in 2001 after TI admired Tiny from afar during his years with Xscape. They married in 2010 and rebuilt their family while raising three children together.
Over the years, they also became reality TV stars through VH1’s “TI & Tiny: The Family Hustle,” which aired from 2011 to 2017. The series gave viewers an unusually close look into their family lives and remains one of the longest-running celebrity family shows of its era.
Family has become TI’s biggest priority
The rapper’s shifting priorities extend far beyond music.
Instead of chasing another recording cycle, he says spending time with his wife and their children now brings him the greatest satisfaction. Their household has evolved as the children have grown into adulthood, creating a different rhythm than the one that once revolved around incessant touring and studio sessions.
TI also credits fatherhood with changing the way he approaches life. “I learned not to talk as much as listen,” he said.
His comments reflect years of personal growth following several controversies, including criticism over comments he made in 2019 about his daughter Deyjah. He later publicly apologized, acknowledging the negative reaction that followed.
Even through these difficult times, he remains grateful that his family’s reality series has preserved milestones that might otherwise have faded with time.
TI reflects on the path that brought him here
TI’s confidence today stands in stark contrast to the life he describes as a teenager.
Growing up in Atlanta, he openly spoke about his involvement in criminal activities before music completely changed his future. Looking back, he now wishes he had invested more of that energy elsewhere.
“I should have been somewhere reading or writing, learning to play the piano,” he recalls before adding that he would tell his younger self to “focus that time and attention on something that might serve you better later in life, because you’re going to need it.”
This perspective became central to his legacy. Beyond music, TI has expanded into acting, business ventures, community work, podcasting and film production, demonstrating a career that has gradually evolved beyond just rapping.
A final album opens the door to a new chapter
Although TI is retiring from recording, he is not disappearing completely.
He plans to spend time on the King Succession Tour alongside his sons Domani and King, who are both pursuing careers in music. The tour represents a symbolic passing of the torch while allowing him to stay connected to fans without starting another era of recording.
Looking back on everything he’s accomplished, the rapper says he has no regrets about this journey.
“I feel lucky to have had such a long career, to go from being a kid who prayed to be a part of something to having such an important role,” he said.
As for what comes next, TI seems content to let his work speak for itself.
“I just feel like that’s it. I’m going to catch you all out of hand.”
With his legacy firmly established, TI now enters the next phase of his life with a sense of peace and determination.
