Earthquake in Peru At least 5 dead and hundreds displaced

A powerful earthquake ravaged Peru’s Andes region over the weekend… leaving at least five people dead, more than 20 injured and hundreds forced from their homes, authorities say.
Authorities say the 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday evening near the town of Sicaya in central Peru at a shallow depth of about 10 km, causing widespread damage across the region.

Authorities say several buildings have partially collapsed, including a church and a convent, while homes in some of the hardest-hit farming communities have been reduced to rubble. Local television footage showed residents gathered outside overnight as emergency crews searched damaged neighborhoods.
The authorities of #Peru informed that the #Seismo of magnitude 5.1 with an epicenter 7 kilometers above Chupaca in the Junín region, caused an intensity IV-V in the area and already has several points in the district of Chilca in Huancayo without electrical power.

Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute says at least 300 people have been displaced and authorities are still working to determine how many people are still missing.
The country is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the most seismically active regions in the world, making earthquakes a frequent threat. In 2007, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 killed nearly 600 people in southern Peru.
