The attack happened around 10:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. GMT), with a report to Berlin police that a white vehicle had hit the crowd at a Pride event in the capital.
Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered at Tiergarten Park, near the iconic Brandenburg Gate, for the annual event, known as Christopher Street Day.
Some people were also stabbed during the incident.
Shortly after, the Pride event was canceled.
One performance ended abruptly, with organizers taking the stage and informing the crowd that the event was over and that they should begin walking toward the exits.
As the message was relayed to the crowd, the word “Evacuation” was projected on a large screen on the stage.
Unverified video posted to social media showed large crowds of people leaving the scene as emergency vehicles rushed to the scene.
Around 1 a.m. local time, police confirmed that one woman had been killed and 16 others injured.
Shortly after, police confirmed they had located the vehicle believed to have been used in the attack, which had crashed into a tree.
