Although it has only benefited from a handful of video game adaptations, Lord of the Rings the translation to our PC monitors and CRT screens has always been quite successful. Sure, there were a few hiccups here and there, but for the most part, LotR continued to deliver memorable new adventures across Middle-earth as well as faithful retellings of films and books that continue to entertain fans to this day.
However, like many of the very best Lord of the Rings games are, the vast majority of them are no longer accessible, and even more have aged poorly. This does not constitute a questioning of their overall quality, because even the most poorly aged of LotR the games continue to offer truly stunning gameplay. However, for graphic purists and those looking for a more modern format Lord of the Rings video game experience in 2026, this could prove problematic. Fortunately, recent remasters of the best PS2 LotR games solve both of these problems for good.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on PlayStation 2 are over 20 years old and, as a result, have not aged particularly well. Of course, for those who love its chunky visuals, playing it today remains a treat. However, for those who simply want a less blurry, HD experience, this poses a pretty big problem. It would be a shame if these games remained unplayable for the majority of people simply because of outdated graphics, which is why their respective recent remasters are so important.
Modder The128ReBits has released an HD texture pack for both games. These texture packs upgrade all environmental and character elements using AI and offer a 4K Ultra option for those who want the best-looking versions and a Lite version for those interested in playing the remasters on weaker systems. Of course, it’s not the first major Lord of the Rings project to use AIbut it is the first video game, even if it is in an unofficial capacity. Regardless, these texture packs constitute the definitive versions of both games, as it’s unlikely we’ll ever get official remasters.
Texture packs are available through ModDB and will only work with the original GameCube version of the game. Naturally, those who wish to play an enhanced version of either The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Or The return of the king (or both, of course) will have to legally obtain a GameCube ROM of the respective game and play it through the Dolphin emulator. Instructions on how to download and install texture packs are available via their official ModDB page, and it’s a fairly simple process that even those new to the modding scene will understand.
It’s great to see fans coming up with a new way to experience a classic LotR game, especially one that remains largely unplayable elsewhere. These remasters are also a fun distraction for players while they wait for the next Lord of the Rings RPGas well as a great way to introduce newcomers to the series and its best game entries. It would be great to see similar remasters of other lost games LotR video games, and I hope they eventually arrive.
