In 1993, Cyan Worlds’ Mystery changed PC gaming forever. Although few could get beyond the first puzzles, the computer-rendered landscape and vibrant music illustrated what could be incorporated into the nascent CD-ROMs. It was the best-selling video game until The Simsand still controls the space to this day. Despite this, the series hasn’t had a new entry in around twenty years. And it looks like that’s not about to change, as the studio previews a sequel that’s not supposed to be.

“Over a year ago, the Cyan team spent about four months building a prototype for a new game in the Myst universe,” posted the studio. “The prototype (and this purpose-made trailer) were specifically designed for the editors’ eyes only. For various reasons, this project was unable to move forward at the time, BUT we’re still proud of the work the team did – so we’re sharing the prototype teaser with you all now.”

In the teaser for “Project Anglerfish,” we see Mysterythe iconic views of, alluring architecture, unstable crystals and a tailor-made gentleman, who will definitely never betray you, asking for your trust. He demands that you deliver him a book, one of the Powerful Ages, which can create worlds in one moment and imprison you in another.

Just like the most recent remakes of Mystery And Tornthe game was developed with Unreal Engine. It’s a beautiful prototype, especially the impressive character animations. It’s a shame that a full version won’t see the light of day. Anglerfish would have been the first new entry in the series since 2005. Mystery V.

While the 2024 Torn remake was a clever reimagining of the original classic, its sales didn’t stop series of layoffs at Cyan Worlds.
