A baby girl has tragically drowned after falling face-first into a bucket of water while her mother was cleaning in Brazil.

The incident happened on Sunday in the municipality of Jupi, in the state of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil, while the baby was at home with his mother and sister.

The little girl, Perola Isadora Cardoso, was found in the bucket of water by her mother, according to the police.

The nursery where Perola was enrolled was devastated to hear the news and canceled all daycare for that day.

He released a statement on social media saying, "The Municipality of Jupi regrets and expresses its deepest regrets for the death of little Perola Isadora, a student of Kindergarten 1 at the Tia Dora Nursery."

According to Yahoo News, the tragedy happened just a month before Joao's first birthday at their home in the town of Cariacica, also in Brazil.

The baby's aunt told the G1 news portal: "She was tidying the house, mopping. And the boy was in the pantry, on the floor, by the table.

"When she came in, she didn't see the boy. When she went to the kitchen, she saw the boy in the bucket of water."

The operators told them what to do over the phone, but it was not possible to save the baby.

"She started screaming and I heard her screaming asking for help, saying he wasn't breathing," the aunt said.
