Boris Johnson will make a statement to the country as the beleaguered Prime Minister finally prepares to step down.

Tory MPs have left their scandal-hit leader with more than 50 Tories who have left government since Tuesday night.

Number 10 staff have been told Mr Johnson is quitting and his letter has been prepared, two sources told the Mirror.

He should make a statement around noon.

A No10 spokesperson said: 'The Prime Minister will make a statement to the country today.

The defiant Mr Johnson tried to dig in last night as the government crumbled around him, but his refusal to step down only further angered his MPs.

He went on a rampage by sacking Leveling Up secretary Michael Gove in a final show of force.

But a series of ministers resigned this morning, including Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis and Education Secretary Michelle Donelan, who was only appointed to the post 36 hours ago.

Mr. Johnson had sworn to himself to keep fighting and try to avoid another vote of no confidence, but he finally seemed to realize that the game was over this morning.

A No 10 source said Mr Johnson had spoken to Conservative backbench leader Sir Graham Brady to inform him of his decision...
