Elon Musk has final say on US EV charging despite EU denial of Tesla design

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk said Thursday that although the company has made "very hard" efforts to get the European Union to consider the charging design of Tesla, she refused.

What happened: Tesla's design is "fundamentally better in every way for consumers," Musk said. The CEO was responding to a Twitter user asking if the General Motors-Tesla collaboration announced earlier today was the end of the competing Combined Charging System (CCS) for electric vehicle charging.

"We tried very hard to get the EU to consider the Tesla (now NACS) design because it's fundamentally better in every way for consumers, but the Minister of Transportation said "a committee decided on the standard years ago" (sigh)," Musk wrote.

In response to a meme titled "RIP CCS" posted on Twitter earlier, Musk said, "Thank goodness! North America will have a much better connector for charging cars than the rest of the world."

Why it matters: In a Twitter space with Musk earlier today, General Motors Co GM CEO Mary Barra announced a collaboration between the two automakers to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for EV. General Motors said in a statement that it will integrate the NACS connector design into its electric vehicles starting in 2025, which will expand charging access for GM electric vehicle drivers at 12,000 Tesla Superchargers stations. Ford Motor Co F announced a similar collaboration with Tesla last month.

The Tesla charging connector is half the size and twice as powerful as CCS connectors. There are twice as many NACS vehicles as CCSs, and Tesla's supercharging network has 60% more NACS stations than all CCS-equipped networks combined, Tesla said in a blog post in November.
