Elon Musk says you may be able to use Starlink internet on a commercial plane this year

Elon Musk said Thursday that Starlink services, operated by SpaceX, will "hopefully" begin commercial flights later this year.

What happened: Starlink on commercial flights is dependent on Federal Aviation Administration and airline certification, Musk added. The CEO was responding to a Twitter user.

"I can't come soon enough", the user replied.

Why it matters: Last year in October, SpaceX announced "Starlink Aviation" to provide air passengers with streaming-enabled internet access. Reservations are open and deliveries are expected to begin this year. "Internet on airplanes will be like accessing the Internet at home!" said Musk then.

Earlier this year, Musk responded to a report from charter airline JSX equipping its aircraft fleet with Starlink by saying, "Starlink on planes looks like a high-speed connection on the ground."

Last month, it was reported that Starlink internet services would be available as a free service on select Brightline trains that serve South Florida between Miami and West Palm Beach. Brightline is the first passenger rail service to offer Starlink, marking Starlink's foray into the rail industry. Starlink already serves the aviation and marine industries.
