Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested two Ekpo masquerade participants over allegations of extorting money from residents and assaulting members of the public in Ikot Ekpene. The state police spokesperson, Timfom John, identified the suspects in a statement on Thursday as Ine Isong, 29, of Ukana Ikot Esoh Village, and Emmanuel Ekpenyong, 20, from Ikono Local Government Area.
Operatives of the Akwa Ibom Police Command have arrested two Ekpo masquerades, participants, for allegedly terrorising members of the public and extorting money from them. The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Azare, reiterated that the Command will not tolerate the use of cultural practices or masquerade activities as a cover for criminality, intimidation, extortion or violence against members of the public.

Kiyawa said Idris reported the threat at the Gezawa Divisional Police Headquarters at about 1:30 a.m. on October 26, stating that an unidentified person had called him two days earlier and threatened to kidnap him.
