Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has held high-level talks with the Secretary-General of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), Dr. Mark Speich, in Accra on Thursday. KAS is one of Germany’s leading political foundations and is internationally affiliated with the NPP. Dr. Bawumia’s Accra engagement with them centred on developments in Ghana’s political landscape and efforts being made to reorganise the New Patriotic Party.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the Secretary-General of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), Dr. Mark Speich The NPP leader used the occasion to reiterate his resolve to rebuild the NPP, disclosing that over the last two years, deliberate steps have been taken to reinforce the party’s internal structures to make it more responsive to the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians.

He further updated KAS on the progress of two flagship party projects – the Patriotic Institute and the Policy Unit. Describing both initiatives as “close to his heart,” Dr. Bawumia said they are designed to groom future political leadership, open up avenues for youth participation in public service, and guarantee that NPP policies are grounded in evidence, financially sound and practicable.

He indicated that the ultimate objective is to transform the NPP into a “more inclusive, intellectually vibrant and policy-oriented party with the capacity to drive Ghana’s sustainable development.” The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, which is linked to Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has for years worked closely with the NPP, supporting programmes in democratic governance, institutional strengthening and policy development.

Thursday’s meeting is part of a broader round of consultations Dr. Bawumia is holding with international partners and local stakeholders as part of the NPP’s reorganisation drive ahead of the 2028 polls.

Divided by Party, United in Suffering: Ghana’s dilemma of blind partisan loyalty

This is where I juxtapose Karl Marx’s famous description of religion as the “opium of the masses” to offer an interesting lens through which to examine Ghanaian partisan politics. Marx, the German philosopher and economist, used opium as a metaphor for something that provides comfort amid suffering while potentially distracting people from the conditions responsible for that suffering.
