‘Unavailable in India’: Why are social media posts being blocked amid protests? MeitY’s advisory to Meta, shorter takedown deadlines under amended IT Rules, and platforms’ own enforcement policies have brought renewed scrutiny of how online content is blocked, and what recourse users have
Delhi Police have issued around 300 takedown requests in the past three months, with most acted upon by the platforms, according to sources. File photo for representational purposes only.
The story so far: In recent weeks, social media users have reported a spate of posts, reels and accounts being blocked or taken down across platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and X. Screenshots shared online show notices stating, “Your post is unavailable in India”, while others say access to content has been restricted through an automated system implemented under India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
The restrictions have come amid protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation across the country.
