Crackdown on ganja cultivation continues, 40 plants seized in Adilabad district

In continued crackdown on illegal cannabis cultivation in cotton-growing areas of Adilabad district, Boath police seized 40 ganja plants allegedly grown as an intercrop in a cotton field at Nigini village in Boath mandal on Thursday.

The police arrested the accused, identified as Lakshman Madvi, 51, a resident of Nagini village.

According to the police, he was ‘ganja consumer’ who had allegedly taken to cultivating the prohibited crop.

The seized ganja plants were valued at around Rs 4 lakh, police said.

A case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation was under way.

Police warned of stringent legal action against those involved in cultivation, sale and transportation of ganja.

They also said they would recommend discontinuing government welfare benefits for those found cultivating the prohibited crop.
