In a move to promote personnel health and well-being, the Bono East Regional Fire Command held its annual breast screening exercise.

The event, which took place at the Regional Headquarters on Thursday, October 2029, saw the Regional Fire Commander, ACFO I Rev. Naomi Ofori-Adubea Sarpong (Mrs.), and the Fire Ladies of the region undergo thorough medical checks.

A dedicated medical team from the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman facilitated the exercise, reinforcing the Command's commitment to early detection and preventive healthcare.

Addressing the women after the screening, ACFO I Rev. Naomi Ofori-Adubea Sarpong emphasised the critical importance of breaking the silence surrounding breast health. She urged women to be bold and proactive in examining their breasts for early signs of any problems.

She noted that many women tend to keep issues to themselves until they develop into serious conditions, a trend she hopes to reverse. The Regional Commander clarified a common misconception, explaining that early detection of breast cancer does not necessarily lead to the removal of the breast.

“Early detection saves lives. It is better to have a breast removed and live a healthy life than to keep it a secret and die with it,” she stated, encouraging the women to prioritise their lives over fear.

The medical team, led by Fidelis Saanaa, an oncologist and senior nursing officer at Holy Family Hospital, provided expert guidance during the exercise. Saanaa cautioned the women against seeking treatment outside of recognised medical facilities.

He specifically warned against the dangers of jumping from one prayer camp to another in search of spiritual cures, stressing that "breast cancer is not a spiritual illness."

The event served as a reminder of the Bono East Regional Fire Command's holistic approach to the welfare of its staff, ensuring that the "Fire Ladies" are not only equipped to fight fires but are also empowered to take charge of their personal health.
