Ghana is set to host a new cultural and entertainment event, Ghanival 2026, which will combine elements of Brazilian carnival with Ghanaian music, culture, fashion, food and dance. The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, at the University of Ghana Sports Complex, Legon, in Accra.

Organisers say the festival will serve as an opening event for the December festivities while launching a broader cultural celebration towards Ghana's 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.

Ghanival is expected to feature live music, entertainment, carnival performances, fashion, food and other cultural activities, bringing together Ghanaians, members of the diaspora and international visitors.

The initiative seeks to blend Brazil's renowned carnival tradition with Ghana's cultural identity to create an entertainment experience inspired by the two countries.

The launch also comes ahead of the 2027 Rio Carnival, where one of Brazil's leading samba schools, Acadêmicos do Grande Rio, is expected to showcase a theme exploring historical links between Brazil and Ghana.

The school's announced theme, “Sankofa Tabon – Os Retornados da Costa do Ouro e a Estrela Negra da Liberdade,” focuses on the history of the Tabon people, their return from Brazil to the Gold Coast and the historical connections between the two countries.

Organisers say Ghanival will provide an opportunity to celebrate those cultural connections in Ghana, bringing together local and international audiences through music, dance and other creative expressions.

Beyond the December 2026 event, the organisers intend to develop Ghanival into a larger cultural platform ahead of Ghana's 70th Independence anniversary.

The proposed 2027 celebration will focus on Ghana's history, heritage, music, fashion, food, creative industries, tourism and entrepreneurship.

Ghanival 2026 is expected to attract music lovers, families, young people, creatives, tourists and members of the diaspora as part of Accra's December entertainment season.
