Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), India’s first university dedicated to health sciences, will celebrate its 40th anniversary (ruby jubilee) on October 26, 2026, in Vijayawada.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Vice-Chancellor P. Chandrasekhar said Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan would attend the celebrations as chief guest. Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu would also participate in the celebrations to be organised at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Kalavedika, he informed.

He said the celebrations would mark four decades of the institution’s contribution to medical education and healthcare and informed that the university would formally complete 40 years on November 1.

Established in 1986 following the initiative of former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, the university was envisioned as a dedicated institution to promote medical and allied health education. Over the years, it had grown into a major centre for health sciences education, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor said that owing to the Model Code of Conduct currently in force, I&PR Minister Kolusu Partha Sarathy would receive the Vice-President at the airport on behalf of Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav and accompany him to the venue.

Highlighting the university’s expansion, Dr. Chandrasekhar said it now had more than 580 affiliated institutions, including 38 medical colleges, 17 dental colleges, over 280 nursing colleges and approximately 95 physiotherapy colleges. It also oversees courses in Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy and Naturopathy, he added.

Registrar T. Sai Sudheer said a commemorative souvenir documenting the university’s achievements and contributions over four decades would be released during the celebrations. More than 1,000 medical students, department heads, government officials and other dignitaries were expected to attend, he said.

President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the National Medical Commission M. K. Ramesh would also attend the function, he added.
