Technical University Vice-Chancellors appeal to TUTAG to call off strike

The Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) have appealed to the Technical Universities Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) to call off its strike, warning that the industrial action could further disrupt academic calendars and affect students.

The strike, which began on October 1, 2026, has halted teaching and learning activities across technical universities, raising concerns about the timely completion of the academic year.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 23, the vice-chancellors said they recognised the concerns behind the industrial action but urged the union to prioritise students' welfare while negotiations continue.

During a meeting with TUTAG's national leadership on Thursday, October 22, VCTU-G appealed for the strike to be suspended to allow discussions aimed at resolving the outstanding grievances.

The statement said the union should consider “the interest of students’ welfare and protection of the academic calendar” and allow dialogue to continue through the appropriate institutional and administrative channels.

The vice-chancellors warned that another disruption could reverse progress made by technical universities in restoring academic schedules following previous interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Technical Universities have made considerable efforts in restoring and stabilizing their academic calendars,” the statement said, adding that another interruption could create challenges for students and university management that “might take a long time to resolve”.VCTU-G stressed that resolving staff concerns through established labour relations must go hand in hand with protecting students' interests and ensuring the continuity of academic activities.

The vice-chancellors also called on the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to help facilitate an early resolution of the dispute through constructive engagement with the relevant stakeholders.

“The VCTU-G looks forward to renewed engagement among all relevant stakeholders and a timely, mutually acceptable and sustainable resolution that will enable teaching and learning to resume in the TUs without delay.”
