'Police are coming for you': Minister's message to drive-by shooters
The manhunt for two masked gunmen who fired at least six shots at a crowd of innocent people outside a Queensland pub has shifted to a homicide investigation.
A family-friendly boxing event south of Brisbane, shots fired and now a community in mourning.
The manhunt for two masked gunmen who fired at least six shots at a crowd of innocent people outside a pub in Logan has shifted to a homicide investigation.
Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau, 19, died in hospital after she was shot in the head and neck.
Police are yet to identify either of the gunmen, or another man who they think assisted with their getaway.
They are still investigating the level of premeditation to the crime and have not ruled out links to organised crime.
Queensland's police minister has issued a promise to those involved and those who know who is behind the shooting.
Here's how a community event soured in a matter of minutes.
A local boxing gym, SHDW Boxing, is hosting its annual fight night event at Fitzys Loganholme, a popular pub in the Logan area.
During an intermission, a number of people gather in the passenger drop-off zone.
A Mitsubishi ASX with no number plates is seen at Fitzys Waterford on Albert Street, a different pub under the same branding, about 10 kilometres away from the boxing event.
We now know that inside the vehicle were two masked and armed men.
It remains unclear why the pair were at a different Fitzys location.
That same Mitsubishi approaches the drop-off zone at Fitzys Loganholme, stopping in close proximity to a crowd of people gathered outside.
The masked gunman fire at least six shots from the front passenger window.
19-year-old Jimboomba woman, Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau, is shot in the head and neck.
A 38-year-old man is hit in the abdomen and arm, and a 27-year-old man and a 37-year-old man are both shot in the abdomen.
Their names are Zachary Uchtman, Brodie Blackwood and Kane Barrett.
CCTV and witnesses identify two males in the car wearing balaclavas and gloves.
A crime scene is declared, with paramedics and members of the public assisting police.
Bystanders and people who attended the event help keep the four shooting victims alive by giving first aid.
Other bystanders move the rest of the crowd inside, where people were seen ducking behind tables and the boxing ring.
The Mitsubishi ASX is set alight on Maloney Road in Waterford West.
CCTV shows a second vehicle picking up the two men, police say.
Police declare it a crime scene, and later say that one of the offenders may have suffered burns while setting the car alight.
A dual-cab utility is set alight on Beenleigh-Beaudesert Road near Mount Tamborine. Police believe it to be linked to the getaway.
Police seize both vehicles for forensic examinations.
Speaking outside the venue, resident Shae Hilton says the shooting makes her sick with anger.
"This place has been such a family place for so long and seeing this has actually put goosebumps through my body," she says.
"Things like this shouldn't be happening, and I pray for everyone's family right now."
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin gives an update to the public.
He says police are looking for at least three people involved in the shooting and are working to determine a link between the assailants and the victims.
It is believed the shooting had an element of "pre-planning" and Task Force Maxima — the specialist Queensland police unit that investigates outlaw motorcycle gangs — is involved in the investigation.
Premier David Crisafulli addresses the media, describing it as a "horrendous crime".
"It is completely unacceptable that people on a night out at a pub, doing something Queenslander as you can possibly find, can be caught and find themselves as collateral damage" he says.
Logan Mayor Jon Raven assures his community the city is full of "good people".
"They're your friends, they're your neighbours, they're part of your community," he says.
Chief Superintendent Mel Adams says there is "no indication" the victims were targeted and does not believe there will be a retaliatory attack.
She says officers are following up on several lines of inquiry but would not say if it was gang-related.
She urges the community to "step up" to help solve the crime.
Shooting victims Brodie Blackwood and Kane Barrett are released from hospital.
Zachary Uchtman remains in hospital receiving treatment.
Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau is still on life support in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Police confirm that Ms Schuster-Togiatau has died in hospital.
"A 19-year-old woman in the prime of her life who was simply going out for a night out with friends has had her life taken from her in the most cowardly way," Detective Inspector Galpin says.
"We're in touch with the family and they're not doing well.
"It's an incredibly difficult time. I can't imagine the hurt they're going through."
Logan MP Linus Power expresses his condolences to the 19-year-old's family in state parliament.
"As those closest to Vana-Reese grieve her loss, may they know that they do not do so alone, that the thoughts and support of their community, the whole Logan community, are with them during this incredibly difficult time," he says.
Detective Inspector Galpin appeals for anyone with information to come forward.
"There are people out there who know exactly who was involved in this offence and know exactly why it occurred," he says.
Police confirm more than 80 detectives are involved in the investigation and are following several lines of inquiry.
Detective Inspector Galpin tells reporters police are keeping "a very open mind" to any links to motorcycle gangs.
"If that leads to the ID of gang members, their associates or other form of organised crime, then we will expand the scope of our investigation at that point," he adds.
He concedes there is a possibility the perpetrators could have left Queensland.
Police Minister Dan Purdie offers reassurance to the community, but issues a warning to those who might know who is behind the shooting.
"I can assure that our police are doing absolutely everything they can to solve this matter and to bring these perpetrators to justice," he said.
