New HMT watches celebrate Kannada identity with regional design elements

Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and BJP leader R. Ashok unveiling the ‘HMT Kannadiga’ wristwatches, in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy on Sunday unveiled a new collection of watches by Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), named “HMT Kannadiga”, to mark the 71st Karnataka Rajyotsava. The watches will soon be available at the HMT stores in the city.

Hundreds of people thronged the HMT grounds in north Bengaluru. However, much to their disappointment, the watches were not yet available for purchase. The new collection comprises four different variants, although the design remains the same. The watches come with different strap and chain options. To emphasise the essence of the language, the dials feature Kannada numericals. A Gandabherunda emblem highlights Kannada pride, while the yellow-and-red Kannada flag and the series name, “HMT Kannadiga”, underscore regional identity.

The watches are estimated to be priced at ₹3,500 and ₹3,600, placing them in the HMT’s premium segment. Meanwhile, pictures of the watches released on Saturday have been widely shared on social media and among groups of watch aficionados.

According to officials, the watches will feature modern technology and a radium glow. The strap variants will be fitted with genuine Italian leather straps.
