Obuasi SHTS: Third-year students to return October 25, second-years November 16

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced separate reporting dates for continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), following the school’s temporary closure in August. The Ghana Education Service subsequently interdicted Mr Abdulai pending investigations, while a complaint was lodged with the police.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced separate reporting dates for continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), following the school’s temporary closure in August.

In an update on the school, the Service said third-year students are expected to report on Sunday, October 25, 2026, while second-year students are to return on Monday, November 16, 2026.

First-year students reported to school on September 18, 2026, and have remained on campus since then, according to the announcement.

The staggered return follows the temporary closure of the school to continuing students on August 5, 2026, after disturbances on campus resulted in the destruction of school property. The unrest also led to the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, being attacked by some students, according to media reports.

The disturbances occurred amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster. The Ghana Education Service subsequently interdicted Mr Abdulai pending investigations, while a complaint was lodged with the police.

The police have since investigated a complaint involving a student and forwarded the case docket to the Attorney-General for study and advice. The headmaster’s interdiction remains separate from the criminal investigation into the allegations.

The GES has said preparations are underway to enable continuing students to resume academic work, with further updates to be communicated as necessary.

The prolonged closure had raised concerns about the academic progress of affected students, particularly final-year students preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
