Five transport unions threaten nationwide shutdown over trading activities at bus stops

The unions, led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, say the planned action follows the government’s failure to enforce regulations restricting commercial activities at transport terminals. The action is being jointly organised by five groups: the GPRTU of TUC, Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

Commercial transport services across Ghana could be disrupted on Wednesday, November 4, after five transport unions announced plans to withdraw their services in protest against trading at designated bus stops and on pedestrian walkways.

The unions, led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, say the planned action follows the government's failure to enforce regulations restricting commercial activities at transport terminals.

They are demanding the enforcement of Regulation 142 of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2519, arguing that the continued occupation of bus stops by traders is making it difficult for commercial drivers to operate.

The unions also contend that drivers are being unfairly penalised for traffic violations, particularly through the government's TraffiTech-GH monitoring system, while trading activities at bus stops and pedestrian walkways remain unchecked.

As part of the protest, commercial drivers have been directed to park their vehicles on Wednesday, November 4, and stay off the roads until further notice.

The unions say the decision follows unsuccessful attempts to get the relevant authorities to address their concerns.

They have apologised to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the withdrawal of services could cause.

The action is being jointly organised by five groups: the GPRTU of TUC, Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

The planned shutdown could affect thousands of commuters who depend on commercial transport for their daily journeys, including workers, traders and students.

Passengers are therefore being urged to make alternative travel arrangements ahead of the proposed industrial action.

Ultimately, a short-term allowance should be weighed against the more lasting alternatives available: a sustainable wage framework, targeted cash transfers for vulnerable households in the informal economy, and cheaper mass transport that lowers costs for every commuter. Relief for public servants is welcome, and labour has negotiated hard for it.
