Residents of North Tongu and persons displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage are expected to join the Y3 Gye Y3 Sika demonstration in Accra on Tuesday, November 3, the Volta Regional Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Emmanuel Senyo Amekpulenu, has said.
The protest, scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m., is expected to bring together young people and other concerned groups to demand accountability over reported financial discrepancies.
Speaking on The AM Show with Maame Esi Nyamekye Thompson, Mr Amekpulenu said the demonstration would also provide an opportunity for residents affected by the Akosombo spillage to demand funds intended to support their recovery and rebuild structures destroyed by the disaster.
“We are expecting people from the North Tongu, that is the constituency of the Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. We are expecting the displaced people who were left in the Akosombo spillage, who are now sleeping in very dilapidated tents,” he said.
He said the affected residents were expected to use the protest to demand the release of funds meant to rebuild their homes and other structures.
The procession is expected to begin at Villaggio before proceeding to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where demonstrators will make their first stop.
The protesters will then move to the Presidency, where the NPP National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, is expected to present a petition to the President.
Mr Amekpulenu said the Ghana Police Service had been notified of the demonstration and would provide security.
On the reported financial discrepancies prompting the demonstration, Mr Amekpulenu said the issues should be investigated to establish what went wrong and identify those responsible.
He said although concerns had been raised about the Minister's supervision of the activities in question, no individual should be considered guilty before investigations were completed.
“If anybody is found culpable, whether it is the Minister or whichever agencies are found responsible, then yes. But until that is done, we cannot say he is guilty,” he stated.
He called for an audit to examine the concerns and establish responsibility for any wrongdoing.
Mr Amekpulenu also urged young people, particularly those affected by the issues, to participate in the demonstration.
