British adventurer completes 28-year, 50,000km walk home

A 57-year-old British adventurer, Karl Bushby, has returned home after completing a remarkable 28-year, 50,000-kilometre journey on foot across four continents without using any form of transport to advance his trek. Bushby arrived in his home city of Hull, northeast England, on Monday, where he was welcomed by a cheering crowd of up to 1,000 people after completing the extraordinary journey that began in Chile in 1998.

The former British paratrooper, who embarked on the adventure at the age of 29, had two rules for the expedition: never use transport to move forward and never return home until he had completed the challenge. Addressing the crowd, Bushby thanked those who supported him throughout the journey, describing the achievement as a collective effort. “I didn’t do this alone,” he said, adding that it had been a “global effort”.

He said the journey involved overcoming numerous obstacles, including challenges involving governments and difficult geographical conditions. “You wouldn’t believe just how many people have been involved in this, to get us around the kinds of obstacles that we face. We’ve faced down governments, we’ve faced down some of the hardest challenges,” he said.

His route took him through the length of the Americas, across the frozen Bering Strait from Alaska into Russia, and through parts of Central Asia and Europe. Along the way, he traversed jungles, mountains and deserts, pushing his belongings on a metal-framed cart. He was applauded on Sunday as he crossed the iconic Humber Bridge near Hull in thick mist before making his final approach to the city centre.

Hull Mayor, Maria Coward, who welcomed him on Monday, praised his determination and perseverance. “So many people have followed Karl on his epic journey. We have all felt inspired by his spirit, tenacity and dogged determination,” she said, describing the achievement as a source of pride for the city. Bushby was also expected to reunite with his mother, Angela, his 36-year-old son, Adam, and a 12-year-old granddaughter he had never met.

He began the expedition following the breakdown of his marriage, after his wife returned to Northern Ireland with their son. His journey was interrupted several times, including when Russia refused to grant him a visa. The 2008 global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic also forced him to suspend the expedition. During the interruptions, he temporarily settled in different locations, including a base in Mexico, before resuming the trek from the exact point where he had stopped.

In early October, he swam across the English Channel to return to the United Kingdom. “Feels good to have UK soil under my feet after all these years,” he said in a statement, acknowledging that the journey had not been easy. “All of us can accomplish more than we will ever imagine,” he added. German filmmaker Werner Herzog and his crew accompanied Bushby during his homecoming as part of a feature-length documentary titled Walk of Life, which chronicles the extraordinary expedition.

The production company behind the documentary has supported Bushby’s journey for 16 years, providing financial and logistical assistance. However, Bushby admitted that returning to a conventional life after nearly three decades on the road presented its own challenges. In an interview with AFP in northern France in September, he said he was apprehensive about adjusting to life back in Britain.

“I’ve got to try and get established in the grown-up world again,” he said. AFP
