Compound wall of Government Polytechnic College for Women in Nellore collapses

The compound wall of 40-year-old building of Government Polytechnic College for Women collapses due to heavy rain in Nellore on Monday.

A major disaster was averted when the compound wall of a 40-year-old building at Government Polytechnic College for Women collapsed due to heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Murasu in Saraswathi Nagar (Division 51) within the Nellore Rural area on Monday (November 2, 2026).

A large tree at the college broke and fell onto the compound wall. Only a couple of cars parked adjacent to the wall were damaged, but no student or staff were injured in the incident.

Last year, The Hindu reported on the dilapidated condition of the 40-year-old building. Although the parents of the students had requested the A.P. Department of Technical Education to renovate the building several times, no action was taken due to lack of budget.

S. Venkateswarulu, the parent of a student, said, “Fortunately, only the wall collapsed due to the rain. Both the college and hostel buildings are currently in poor condition, and it is unsafe for the students. The government should undertake the construction of a new building.”
