Breaking: Ciaron Maher takes Melbourne Cup trifecta with Point of Law win

Ciaron Maher takes the Melbourne Cup trifecta as Point of Law wins at Flemington after an incredible front-running effort from Royal Supremacy.

Point of Law has given trainer Ciaron Maher his second Melbourne Cup victory.

The Geelong Cup-winner maintained his form, becoming the third Northern Hemisphere three-year-old to win after Rekindling in 2017 and Cross Counter in 2018.

The horse, making the sixth start of his career, ran down stablemate Royal Supremacy in the straight to win an incredible race, beating Zahrann and Juja Kibo also from the Maher stable.

Ethan Brown rode Point of Law, formerly owned by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, to victory, winning his first Melbourne Cup.

In a dramatic race, Royal Supremacy, hit the front in the first half of the race and in a brave effort went all-out for the lead, stretching the margin to up to 20 lengths by the 1,000m mark.

As the rest of the field scrambled to rein in the leader, Royal Supremacy maintained a huge gap around the turn and into the long Flemington straight.

For a time it looked like he would win, but Brown pushed Point of Law out of the chasing pack to produce an incredible finishing burst, hitting the front and winning by 3.75 lengths.

After the race Brown, who is engaged to fellow jockey Celine Gaudray, paid tribute to Maher.

"He took me out of horse training at one stage when I was about 22 years old. But yeah, he's done nothing but support me and backed me and I buggered up plenty of times on his horses and … he's had nothing but faith," he told Channel Nine.

By the time he stepped up to receive his trophy at the presentation, Brown was struggling to come to terms with what had happened.

"I've got to pinch myself here," he said.
