NSA targets five stadia in bid to end venue challenges

Ghana has struggled in recent years to find stadia fit to host high-profile matches, with only the Accra Sports Stadium currently approved by CAF. It is unclear which venue will host Ghana’s next AFCON qualifier against Somalia in mid-November, with the Accra and Essipong stadia being considered as possible venues.

Acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, is promising the overall completion of works on five national stadia to end the “problems of venues” for games.

Ghana has struggled in recent years to find stadia fit to host high-profile matches, with only the Accra Sports Stadium currently approved by CAF.

The stadium last hosted Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in September.

“[Hoping to complete] Essipong and Accra stadia then we go and tackle Kumasi [Baba Yara Sports Stadium], then we proceed to Tamale [Aliu Mahama Stadium] then we think of Cape Coast. [The stadium] was neglected just like Essipong,” Sarpong told Asempa FM.

"So we are gradually fixing the stadia. In the next one year or so, we will not be having problems with venues for our matches.”

Meanwhile, the Essipong Stadium hosted its first competitive game in seven years, with the Black Queens scoring seven goals against Mauritius on October 13.

It is unclear which venue will host Ghana’s next AFCON qualifier against Somalia in mid-November, with the Accra and Essipong stadia being considered as possible venues.
