NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 – Child mortality in Kenya has declined, with fewer children dying before their fifth birthday, according to the 2025/2026 Kenya Mini Demographic and Health Survey.
The latest findings show that under-five mortality has fallen to 37 deaths per 1,000 live births, down from 41 recorded in the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey.
Infant mortality has also declined from 32 to 30 deaths per 1,000 live births, while neonatal mortality has dropped from 21 to 19 deaths per 1,000 live births.
The figures point to progress in child survival, although preventable deaths remain a concern, highlighting the need for sustained investment in maternal and child healthcare.
The survey provides updated information on the health and living conditions of children and households across Kenya’s 47 counties.
World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Kenya Neema Kimambo said the findings should inform interventions aimed at improving children’s health outcomes, particularly in underserved communities.
She noted that behind every statistic is a child whose survival and development depend on adequate nutrition and access to essential healthcare services.
The findings are expected to help the national and county governments identify gaps in child healthcare and strengthen interventions targeting preventable deaths.
